It is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement as the Executive Director of the Recreation Council of Greater St. Louis effective October 3, 2025. It is bittersweet to leave such an incredible organization that I love so dearly!

It has always been my priority to bring innovative, inclusive, and enriching programs to individuals with disabilities and their families. I’ve been very fortunate during my tenure at the Recreation Council to have the support to advocate for and implement impactful programs. It has truly been a privilege to help make significant enhancements over the past thirty-five years to allow individuals with disabilities, and their families, to choose recreation opportunities that best meet their interests and support needs.

It has also been a great pleasure working with the staff and board of the SB40 Boards in St. Louis City. St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Jefferson County. Without their support over the years, our work at the Recreation Council would not have been possible. Your partnership has meant so much to me, and to many others as well. Thank you!

To the recreation providers, schools, school districts, Park and Recreation Departments, camps, and other service providers in our service areas, it has been a wonderful and rewarding relationship to work side by side with you in working toward our mission. Your commitment to advocating and/or serving individuals with disabilities in your activities and programs is to be commended. Keep doing what you do! You make such a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families and care providers.

To our participants and their families, I have learned so much from you! Thank you for the honor of allowing me, and our staff, to serve you. I hope for you continued choices and acceptance in recreation and leisure opportunities. Keep advocating for these! Recreation is for EVERYONE! I will truly treasure our interactions and work together.

To my staff, both past and present, I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am to have worked with all of you. You each are so unique. I don’t think I have ever met a more committed, passionate and enthusiastic group of individuals! You have been to me both co-workers and family all-in-one. It has truly been an honor to be your leader. There is no doubt that our current “team” is fully capable of navigating the future of the Recreation Council to benefit our constituents to the fullest. I wish only the best to my successor, Mindy Davis, our new Executive Director. Welcome to one of the best organizations out there, always based on a mission of respect for diversity, equality, and inclusion.

Last, but certainly not least, I am so grateful to the past and present Board of Directors of the Recreation Council for giving me this opportunity as the Executive Director of this fine organization, and for your guidance, and support throughout my years at the Recreation Council. Our work together was both impactful and enjoyable! Thank you so much!

I will be forever grateful for the last 35+ years and what the Council has provided to me on both a professional and personal level. I look forward to the next chapter in my life, and I look forward to the next chapter for the Recreation Council as well. I am filled with much hope and optimism for its future. I will miss you all!
Sincerely,

Susan Fleming, Executive Director
