River isn’t brown anymore! Still not dive ready (turbidity is 9.4) and water temp is still a bit chilly(39 degrees). But dive season is in sight! What do the conditions need to be for you to dive?

As we continue our marine life presentation, here is the 4-eyed butterflyfish. The extra “eye” is to confuse predators, its real eye is small and has a vertical line through it. Pretty tricky!! Pic by John F Brown.

The Long-Spine Squirrelfish is a common sight on the reeks, hiding in the shadows during the day. Those big eyes help it locate food during its evening hunts. Pic by John F Briwn.

Don’t you just love the Spotfin Porcupine fish. Just look at those big eyes! When threatened it will inflate its body, causing its spines to erect. Please do not do this for sport, their defense mechanism is not there for out entertainment. Pic by Sue Tackett.

Anther master of disguise, the Slender Filefish. This one is hiding in a gorgonian. Like the octopus, it can change color and skin texture. Typically, only 2”-3” long. Pic by John F Brown.

Not hard to find, just hard to see. The Squat Anemonir Shrimp (aka sexy shrimp) is only 1-2cm in length. Next time you see an anemone, make sure you are neutral and move very slowly, look between the anemone tentacles, there are tiny wonders hidden inside. Pic by Sue Tackett.

The Scorpionfish is a master of camouflage, sitting patiently on the bottom waiting for a meal just to swim by. The red you see in the picture is enhanced by the photographer’s flash, in natural light it blends in perfectly. It is related to the Lionfish and its dorsal fins have poisonous spines.
