‼️Monday Member Highlight (but on a Tuesday)‼️

This week we're highlighting the newest coach to join the ranks at UnCharted CrossFit, Mike Burkart!

"After serving in the military, most of my fitness routine centered around traditional gym workouts and swimming. Years later, my youngest daughter started doing CrossFit in Columbia and encouraged me to give it a try. What immediately attracted me to CrossFit was how much it reminded me of the military: people working hard together, pushing through challenging workouts, and building bonds through shared experiences.

There are two things I love about CrossFit. First, I don’t have to plan my workouts. Someone else takes care of that, so I can simply show up and put in the work. Second, it’s the people. In a traditional gym, you may see the same faces every day without ever learning anyone’s name. At CrossFit, and especially at UnCharted, everyone knows each other. The sense of community and support is unlike anything I’ve experienced in a regular gym.

For me, fitness is one of the best tools for maintaining mental health. After a long day of work, it’s important to have an outlet where I can focus on something physical and leave the stress behind. The gym gives me a chance to burn off mental energy through physical effort. By the time I’m done, I feel reset and ready for whatever comes next.

CrossFit has helped me maintain my mobility and quality of life as I’ve gotten older. I can’t do everything I could when I was younger, but I can still do a lot of it. CrossFit also helped prepare me for and recover from a double knee replacement. The strength, mobility, and overall fitness I built through training made a huge difference in getting through that process and returning to an active lifestyle. CrossFit has allowed me to stay active, capable, and confident that I can continue doing the things I enjoy for years to come."

Mike, welcome to the UnCharted coaching team. You're a great part of our fitness community, and we're excited to see you flourish as a coach!

Active Recovery 🧘‍♀️

The day after Murph seems like a perfect time to talk about active recovery. If you did Murph yesterday, then you might be thinking about taking a rest day today to give the legs, shoulders, arms, chest, and everything else a chance to recover. That's a great idea, but the way that we approach our recovery and rest days is important too. We don't want to turn this into a day of just sitting in front of our 💻 or sitting on the 🛋 staring at our 📱.

Active recovery involves low impact exercises performed at lower intensities (30-60% of max heart rate) to get the blood pumping a little bit and get those recovering muscles working through some ranges of motion. This gets oxygen rich blood to our recovering muscles, keeps muscles flexible, helps reduce soreness, and helps us get ready for the next high intensity effort sooner.

Active recovery exercises can include: walking🚶, jogging 🏃‍♀️, swimming 🏊, cycling 🚴‍♀️, rowing 🚣‍♂️, yoga 🧘‍♂️, foam rolling, and stretching.

Push-ups

Less than a week away from Memorial Day Murph, and if you've tackled this workout before, you know those push-ups get tough in a hurry.

While a simple move and maybe one of the first exercises we all learned in P.E., the push-up is one of the toughest movements for people to master.

When performing push-ups, whether you do them Rx'd (only hands and feet on the ground) or modified (knees on the ground or hands elevated), there are a few things to keep in mind to perform the movement effectively.

First, brace your core! Your body should be a straight line from you heels (or knees) to your shoulders. No saggy hips or piked up hips at the top of the push-up. On the way down and on the way back up, your hips and shoulders should move together in a straight line.

Next, hand placement and grip on the floor. Your hands should be slightly wider than you shoulders with your fingers spread out to give you a solid base. You'll also want your pointer finger pointing straight ahead and not inward. Grip the floor with your hands similar to gripping the floor with your toes in a squat.

Finally, your elbows shouldn't be too far out OR too far in. If viewed from above, your elbows, body, and head should make an arrow, not a 'T' or an 'I'. Too far in, and the movement become too triceps dominant. Too far out and our shoulders get put into a week and unsafe position.

If you plan to take on 'Murph' this year we'd love to have you join us for one of our FREE community 'Murphs' on Memorial Day. We'll have classes at 7:15am and 8:45am.

We hope this helps, and we'll see you at the gym!
