Hi Everyone. Here is an article we published last year in a scientific journal. Bottom line we found that no difference existed for increases in lean tissue mass and strength comparing higher frequency and lower frequency resistance training when volume was similar. However, our new question is what if volume exceeds our prior studied level say 15 or 20 sets or more per muscle group per week. I believe strongly and have some pilot work data that outcomes will be improved and to achieve higher volumes of exercise, training frequency must be higher. I believe that frequent resistance training is the key to more lean tissue (muscle mass), less body fat, and health. Training has to be specifically designed to improve or maintain lean tissue via a handful of basic exercises performed progressively and frequently.

Growing up in Missouri, baseball was my passion. As a young man I would practice for hours throwing into a homemade strike zone. Even at a young age I questioned everything about athletic training seeking to find the most productive training methods to improve my performance as a pitcher. It wasn’t until high school I realized the performance improvements possible with strength training. I can remember after a couple months of strength training, specifically leg workouts, being able to jump much higher and being more explosive. Coaches at the high school level were discouraging weight training. Believing athletes could become muscle bound resulting in a decrease in performance, or so they thought. This didn’t lessen my curiosity of the possible benefits of weight training as I could feel the difference. I remember within a few short months being able to dunk a basketball and I knew that was the result of being stronger. This search for knowledge to improve performance was the beginning of my strength training research that quickly turned into a passion. After high school, I worked as a fitness manager for 10 years at our local YMCA and during that time; I earned a degree in Physical Education and went on to teach in the public schools. Following my teaching career, I opened a personal training facility which I have owned for the past 10 years. During this time, I completed my Masters of Science in Exercise Science and completed a thesis focusing on resistance training frequency. The title of my thesis was: “Increasing Lean Mass and Strength: A Comparison of High Frequency Strength Training vs. Low Frequency Training.” I have spent literally thousands of hours training individuals from all walks of life and consider myself very good at transforming individual’s physique (building muscle and losing fat). Even with my academic life and research, centered on discovering the best ways to train, I consider my personal endeavors of competitive natural bodybuilding to have taught me the most. I have had to fight for every ounce of muscle tissue I have built and battle to lose every pound of body fat. I participated in my first natural bodybuilding show in 1993 and was hooked. Currently, I am a WNBF natural Pro bodybuilder. My title as the 2005 NANBF Mr. USA is the accomplishment in which I am most proud. I have gone on to share my passion by promoting a natural bodybuilding show in Springfield, MO every November. My passion and curiosity to find the most productive ways to train to build maximum amounts of muscle and lose body fat still burns today. My training manuals and techniques are developed from my extensive research and experimentation.
