The "Patterson era" of Middleboro wrestling has officially come to an end.
Last week, we held our team banquet to close out the 2025-26 season, one of the most successful ever for the program. We won our 3rd consecutive league championship and 1st ever Sectional championship. We put FIVE! in the D3 state finals; seniors Matt Patterson, Josh Gonsalves, Faith Young, and sophomores Nate Gonsalves and Mila Boucher. Faith was the also the 1st ever Girls State Champ and Girls New England placer for the team. We finished the season with a dual meet record of 29-5-2. We also had 4 win milestones; Nate Gonsalves (100 wins), Iain Lindvall (100 wins), Josh Gonsalves (150 wins), Matt Patterson (250 wins).
The team's success was largely thanks to a group of incredibly impactful seniors; Matt Patterson, John Keeley, Josh Gonsalves, Faith Young and Iain Lindvall.
Iain was a 3-year member of the team and 2-time state qualifier. After his junior year was ended by injury, he had a huge comeback year winning 48 matches and was a Sectional champion. Iain finished his career with 106 wins and 92 pins.
Faith was a 1st year member of the team but made the absolute most of it, winning a D3 State title and placed 6th at the Girls New England tournament. She plans to attend Wingate University in the fall.
John was a 5-year member of the team and a team captain. He was a reliable leader who came through for the team at sectionals, scoring key team points. He found his calling as a youth wrestling coach, logging 100s of hours volunteering through the MB youth program and Brickroad wrestling club. He plans to attend Kean University in the fall.
Josh was a 3-year member of the team and a team captain. He started wrestling as a sophomore and was an instant impact addition to the team winning 151 matches with 100 pins, good enough for 2nd all-time for MB. Josh was lights-out in dual meets going 85-4 over 3 seasons with 80 of those wins by pin, tech, or major dec. He was a 2-time sectional finalist and a D3 State Finalist. Josh will attend Mass Maritime in the fall for Marine Engineering.
Matt was a 7-year member of the team and a 4-year team captain. Matt has been the face of Middleboro wrestling for 1/2 a decade and was the driving force behind the team's positive culture and success. He helped lead the team to 3 league titles, a sectional title and a 2025 D2 Team Sportsmanship award. He was a 5-time Sectional finalist, 2-time State finalist and 3-time New England qualifier. He finished his career with a record of 261-38 with 204 pins (233-26 9th-12th record). He was 125-2 in dual meets since 8th grade and 40-0 at home. He stepped on the mat 300 times representing Middleboro with class and always showed respect to his opponents, officials, and coaches even in times of heartbreaking losses. Matt recently enlisted into the Air Force and plans to become a fire fighter.
