Amendment 3:
Why Mental Health Professionals Are Paying Attention
At The Living Room Wellness Center, we believe bodily autonomy, reproductive freedom, and access to compassionate, evidence-based healthcare are deeply connected to mental health.
Amendment 3 raises serious concerns about these issues.
First, let’s clarify something: Gender-transition surgeries for minors are already prohibited under Missouri law. Restrictions on puberty blockers and hormone treatments for minors are also already in place, with limited exceptions.
We fully support access to evidence-based, gender-affirming care. Gender-affirming care encompasses far more than surgery, and affirming healthcare and supportive environments are important to the psychological well-being of transgender and nonbinary individuals.
But Amendment 3 is also about something else entirely: reproductive freedom.
It would repeal the reproductive healthcare protections Missourians approved in 2024, replacing them with substantially narrower abortion protections.
As mental health professionals, we understand that reproductive decisions can involve complex emotional, physical, relational, and financial circumstances. Being denied autonomy over deeply personal healthcare decisions can contribute to distress, uncertainty, and feelings of powerlessness.
We also recognize the psychological impact of stigma, discrimination, and barriers to appropriate medical care, particularly for already marginalized populations.
Our position is grounded in our professional values: bodily autonomy, informed consent, evidence-based treatment, LGBTQIA+ affirmation, and the belief that healthcare decisions belong in conversations between individuals and qualified healthcare professionals.
Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. The policies that shape our lives also shape our well-being.
