Food plot season is here! We got out to frost seed some clover and switchgrass into last year’s soybean and brassica plot. The 10 yard strip of clover was seeded along the woods edge where it will do well in partial shade. The switch was planted as a screen to border the open ag fields which help with access and deer will feel more secure using this plot.

Planted an area that was newly cleared this spring today. A lot of invasive bush honeysuckle was removed in the process which was a bonus. Before, middle, and after pictures are below. The blend planted here is a mix of quick growing summer annuals including buckwheat, crimson clover, and berseem clover to suppress weeds and also added some sunflowers, peas, and faba beans for a treat for the deer!

Hard to believe food plot season is coming up with a couple feet of snow still on the ground around here, but hopefully it will clear out soon! If it’s in your plans for this year, now is the time to start thinking about frost seeding clover. By broadcasting seed over the last couple inches of snow, you can establish a new clover plot in areas you had brassicas or beans planted last fall. Or it’s good to freshen up an old patch of clover too!

This is what a good plot of turnips can look like late season and into winter, deer have been digging for the turnips and radishes and have almost wiped out the entire plot. It’s a good food source for them to get through the cold weather months

I got out and sat over one of our plots last night, things are looking great with a lot of signs of deer browsing the radish, peas, and grains right now. Here's a few pics from the stand and around the plot. Good luck this season to all!

Had a couple nice bucks feeding in a summer soil builder blend this week! We also planted a small plot of brassicas. This plot is one half of a dual plot where we have a pair of plots planted with stands placed in the middle. The second plot will be planted in our fall grains blend and between the brassicas and grains we should have a good spread for deer to browse throughout the season.

Check out a few pictures of a plot we planted in a mix designed to build our soil and keep weeds down over the summer. Clovers to fix nitrogen, buckwheat to scavenge phosphorus, and peas for a treat to keep the deer coming in. There is a lot of organic matter here that we'll disc under in the coming weeks. The brassica mix to follow should thrive this fall!

We used a "throw and roll" method to plant a sugar beet plot. Basically we broadcast the seed into last fall's standing winter rye and while we sprayed we drove over the rye to lay it down overtop our seed. The rye will be a mulch for the sugar beets as they come up to help reduce weeds and retain moisture. Before and after pics shown below.
