Although there are plenty of preserve hunts going on right now, I am usually this time of year on the road wild bird hunting. So I am especially grateful when a customer sends a cool picture from a hunt, this one from Shawn Lambert. Check those pointers out. Wow! This one will definitely make the web site.

Member Eddie Roberts has been keeping me up with his hunts at the preserve while I am off chasing (mostly in vain) wild quail. He recently had Bill Cothron, USSA TN State Representative, and Bill's son Greyson as guests on a recent hunt and Bill was kind enough to send me this great story of his experience:

"The day arrived and broke crisp and clear. A crisp 22 degrees with slight winds blowing across the Tennessee landscape. Within minutes Eddie Roberts and Cash arrived at Cumberland Fields Sportsman's Club. The gently rolling landscape laying beautifully under the bright blue sky and was meticulously maintained for upland shooting. Within minutes Cash looked hardened as he captured the scent of his quarry. Standing as poised as a statue he held until our hunting party could move into position. With Eddie's command he flushed the birds. Rising with a thunderous explosion the Northern Bobwhite quail rose and filled the air. Greyson, surprised from the flush, missed the covey. Eddie watched as the birds took refuge in in distant parts of the field. Within minutes Greyson was once again slowly approaching Cash who had found and was locked on the hidden birds. At the flush Greyson was able to place a well aimed shot and collect his 1st Bobwhite.
These scenes were repeated multiple times that day, Flushes with challenging and difficult shots, only to be followed by amazing feats of marksmanship, secured by recovering birds and high fives within the party. We were free from the worries of the world that lay beyond the drive. We walked the landscape conversing with a child and the many questions he wanted to know about hunting the elusive Bobwhite. Many things can be gained by looking at things from these walks with your friends and family. The joys of a small child's smile when it all comes together are unforgettable. And for this crisp cool day it took place at a magical upland shooting experience at Cumberland Fields Sportsman's Club and will be forever ingrained in our minds."

This is what it is all about my friends!

Club member Eddie Roberts sent me these great pictures from a cleanup hunt he did the other day. My day job and wild bird hunting schedule have kept me from getting down to the preserve and taking my own pictures. But mine are never this good anyway.

Come on now, doesn't this look like a great place to bird hunt? The habitat is superb and the hunting parties thus far have loved the wild feel of the place and the challenging shooting. We're getting more and more repeat customers and more annual members all the time. Come on down and see what it is all about.

I thought I was being slick today showing up for an afternoon cleanup hunt after a decent size hunt by Mike Buscher, Mark Allen, et. al. this morning. Was I ever wrong. I (or rather my dogs) found two birds in three hours. Man, I have to find some customers that can't shoot so well......

I had a really cool experience at the preserve yesterday when I went around with Jeremiah Maynard and his 3 year old GSP Cooper. It was Cooper's first experience hunting upland birds. What was cool was watching him progress from nosing out his first covey, to holding point for about 15 seconds, to holding point for about 45 seconds, and finally to that moment when you realize that the light bulb was burning at full intensity and Cooper now knew what his mission in life was. And that, my friends, is what it is all about. And the perfect example of why I love doing this.

I finally caught up with Eddie Roberts at the preserve yesterday. Eddie has been down a few times this year but irritating distractions of one form or another have prevented me from getting down to meet him until yesterday. And alas, even yesterday I got there too late to watch his handsome GSP Cash do his thing. Eddie is a huge player in the Pursuit Channel's Hitmen TV show and I can tell you it was an honor and a pleasure to meet this fine gentleman and ultimate outdoorsman. And come this spring, after the preserve has gone quiet, I hope to kick back and watch him pop a few turkeys on TV!

My two bestest bird hunting buddies from Arkansas joined my Setters and me for a little fun at the preserve yesterday. We of course would have gotten many more birds had I been shooting more, and handling dogs and taking pictures less........

Shawn Lambert sent me these cool pictures of some fantastic pointers doing their thing on a hunt at the preserve yesterday. Warm weather shortened their hunt a bit according to Shawn but they bagged lots of birds due to the dog work and some good shooting. I'm really glad these guys are patrons of the preserve and it is totally my loss that I didn't get a chance to tag along with them some this year.

We had the father-son combo of Joe and John Cole back down from Blacksburg, VA this past Friday. Yours truly guided the first part of the hunt and my good young friend and Cumberland Fields patron Hunter Harrison took over for the old man inferior guide in the late afternoon. I think everybody (and more importantly every dog) had a grand time.
