Another gym, another selfie 🤷🏻♀️
Quick side note: to the guy at that was brave enough to ask strangers for help - I see you and I think you’re awesome!! I’m sorry I had no idea how to adjust the cable bench, but I admire that you were willing to ask someone and that you were also willing to consider my alternative of using a regular flat bench press bench. I watched you watch and take in another guy benching and admired that you asked him for help on form and that you weren’t too proud to knock down your weight when he was spotting you and made the suggestion. I noticed you enthusiastically accept his suggestion of the press machine to better master the form.
Everyone is at the gym to grow in their own way. Seeing someone so coachable, humble and willing to get it right was incredibly refreshing. I don’t know if you’ll see this, but know that your willingness to learn and push pride out is so rare and it was really cool watching you grow and learn today!
For everyone else - use this guy as a model. Don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t be afraid to learn. Don’t be afraid to YouTube “how to” right there on the gym floor. If someone is rude or you feel like they’re judging you, know that that is a THEM problem and not a you problem. It’s none of your business if someone is so miserable and angry that they can’t appreciate a newbie.
Some quick etiquette for new people:
1. Please don’t interrupt someone mid set or right before they start a set. Wait until they have finished and approach them.
2. Please don’t be intrusive. A lot of us have got music on, we’re in the zone, we probably look like as****es. Please dont stick your hand in my face to ask a question. A quick wave if I don’t look up while you approach is fine, but please don’t get in peoples bubbles.
3. Ask if they’re willing to help and if they aren’t, that’s ok. There’s always YouTube and you’ve got to understand that some people have very limited time, others are working through something mentally/emotionally and others just don’t like to be bothered. It’s all good, you’ll find the good ones.
4. I promise personal trainers are worth the investment
