Sometimes, great loss leads full circle to joy and gratitude. Now, Love11 founders Emily and Josh know they’ve found the perfect organization to share their commitment to honoring their son's memory and furthering children's futures as they disband their nonprofit, the Micah Daniel Love Foundation.
“I’m happy for Love11’s remaining funds to bless another like-minded and worthy charity in Spokane,” said Emily.
Micah was just eight years old when he died in 2016. His parents will tell you he loved his family, friends, and sports. The foundation was formed to honor his memory and share his contagious love of sports. It raised over $234,000 and gave scholarships to 702 youth in the area to participate in sports.
Love11’s remaining funds, $16,563, will be given to Hillyard Built, a nonprofit founded by Crystal Via.
“Love11 chose Hillyard Built as the recipient of our final funds because they are doing great things, similar things, helping kids thrive, “said Emily.
“Our main goal is to raise money to give back to Hillyard youth, to help them participate in programs that provide skills and enrichment opportunities,” said Crystal.
But there is more to this story. Crystal and Emily’s sons played on the same team. Although the two women don’t remember each other, they remember the crack of a bat, the laughter of children, and the joy the game brought their families. The two also share a common background.
“We worked very hard to get where we are, and we want to help make it a little easier for other families,” said Crystal. “When Emily and I talked, we discussed how the money can be used to provide experiences for children. If the kids don't know experiences exist, how will they know they'll succeed in something? Life is all about experiences.”
Disbanding Love11 isn’t easy for Emily and Josh, but, as Emily said, "the timing feels right," and Hillyard Built can carry on the good born from immense tragedy.
