One last tourney for SLP Youth Wrestling to report on. While most of our wrestlers have moved on to spring & summer activities, Zeke was getting a few final scrap in for the season down in Coralville at the Hawkeye Wrestling Academy freestyle duals. Zeke notched a couple wins on the day and helped his team to a 5th place finish in the dual tournament. He also had the opportunity to meet a few former and current Hawkeye wrestlers. What a cool experience. Great job Zeke!

These future Spirit Lake Park Wrestlers hit the mats once more last weekend to test themselves against the best wrestlers in the Midwest at the Northern Plains Regional Championships in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

Zeke Verschoor competed in Freestyle on Saturday and earned a 3rd place showing at 56 lbs for 8U. Zeke continued to learn and improve his match tactics and showed over the weekend that he is a beast in par terre converting his takedowns into gut wrenches and leg laces for big points. When Zeke sets the pace of the match with his offense, he's really fun to watch.

Hudson Beisell competed in Greco on Friday and came away with a 6th place finish at 86 lbs for 12U. Competition was stiff this weekend as he learned against his first opponent, a US Open Greco Champion. Hudson has great hips and strong technique and is still developing his feel for Greco positions and timing for his attacks. On Saturday, he competed in the freestyle tournament and came away with several wins to earn himself a 6th place finish. He had strong leg attacks and a high finish rate in his wins but ran into the US Open champ in the quarterfinals and again in the medal round, who used his great counters and par terre offense in a pair of wins over Hudson.

Northern Plains is an incredibly tough tournament and both of these boys worked hard to wrestled their way to podium finishes. Thanks once again to Erin Verschoor for the great pictures.

With the Freestyle & Greco seasons mostly over for our youth wrestlers, we want to recognize Zeke and Hudson for a tremendous job representing Spirit Lake Park at tournaments this spring. We also want to recognize our SLP wrestlers who've been in the room trying Freestyle & Greco and their commitment to becoming better wrestlers. They've been putting in some work as well and we can't wait to see them on the mat next year!

These Indian wrestlers were back on the mats this weekend in Cedar Rapids for Iowa/USA State Freestyle & Greco Championships. In their first year of competing in the Olympic styles, Hudson & Zeke have been working on their positioning & hand-fighting and learning to adapt their match strategies to different styles. They've shown great improvement throughout the short season.

Zeke got to work early in his first match earing a tech fall in the first period, thanks to his gut wrench, which we saw him hit a few times throughout the day. Zeke earned 2nd place in his freestyle division. He then had to move up to the next weight class (+6lbs) to get into a greco bracket where he battled his way to a 5th place finish.

Hudson competed in a higher weight class than normal as well, coming straight from a baseball tournament in Sioux City to weigh-ins to compete. Hudson lost a high scoring affair by 1 pt with :01 seconds left in his first freestyle match and was unable to fight through the backside of the bracket, but rebounded in the afternoon to come away with a 2nd place finish in Greco, capping off his day with a big hip toss to send his opponent flying to his back for the fall.

As coaches, no matter how the matches end, we absolutely love watching these guys compete and are so fortunate to get to watch them and see their love for wrestling continue to grow.

Another great weekend on the mat for these Indian wrestlers. They traveled to Perry, Iowa in search of tough competition in Greco and Freestyle. Zeke bumped up a division and competed with some tough 10U wrestlers coming away with a 2nd place showing in Greco and 3rd place in Freestyle, including an 18-16 shootout where he secured a takedown in the closing seconds for the win. Hudson took 1st in both Greco & Freestyle, getting a fall over a state finalist in the freestyle bracket. Great Job Boys!

This pair of SLP wrestlers traveled to Marshall last weekend to compete in their first Greco & Freestyle tournaments of the season. Both Hudson and Zeke earned a 2nd place finish in Greco and 2nd place in Freestyle. Zeke earned a pair of wins by technical superiority while Hudson earned a technical superiority win and a fall. Congrats boys!
