Fun morning chasing one of my favorite fish on the planet. There’s nothing more fun than feeling a big West Okoboji bluegill load up an ultralight setup.

This fish measured 9.75 inches and was the highlight of the trip. So close to that elusive 10 inch mark, but the hunt continues.

The morning also produced a fun mixed bag with yellow bass, perch, and even a bonus walleye. Not a bad way to spend a few hours on the water. 🔥

Some builds are bigger than fishing.

This rod started as a well-worn vintage ultralight that belonged to a customer’s father. It was his favorite rod for years before he passed away. Then it became his son’s favorite rod, holding years of memories on the water.

Unfortunately, the original rod was broken, but one piece was too important to replace.

The old Browning Tennessee grip.

Years of patina caused by fish slime, dirt, old tape residue, and battle scars remain exactly where they belong.

I was able to build a new rod on that original grip, blending modern performance with the vintage feel.

One final touch was adding the words “Hey Kid” to the rod. Something his dad would always say.

Fishing has a way of connecting generations, and this build was a reminder that sometimes the most valuable thing we own isn’t the object itself, but the memories attached to it.

Some things are too meaningful to replace. Like this vintage Browning Tennessee grip with years of patina earned from fish slime, dirt, and old tape residue.

Now it’s ready to continue making memories.
