Hey everyone! We hope everyone's had a game-tastic summer! Schools starting again soon, and we couldn't be more excited. That also means that eSports is starting soon, too! The Spirit Lake eSports Teams CANT WAIT to welcome many new members to both our middle school AND high school teams. (Stay tuned for a more informative post in the next week or so!)
We want to give students the opportunity to join esports for a day, (or multiple days!), to get a taste of what it's like! Join us at any time between 2 and 4 P.M any week-day this week, starting Monday, August 8th, at the Spirit Lake Middle School Commons for a fun eSports experience! $5.00 a day to participate. New members, current members, or even just students curious about the experience may come and join us and see what awaits in eSports. We can't wait to see you all there!
(Not to mention the money being raised goes towards our teams and equipment, therefore we can continue striving for the best of everything we can get for both our teams!)

Senior Spotlight, Day Seven: Preston Gaskill!

Our final senior Spotlight showcases Preston, who joined us this year as part of our Overwatch Varsity team. He was always ready to step up to the plate if we needed him, and helped out at many JV games as well!

After graduating from SLHS, Preston will be headed to Iowa State University to study Computer Engineering.

Senior Spotlight, day six: Paityne Gehring!

Paityne has been in eSports for 2 years, and this year has stepped up to the role as Vice President of the club! This means when the club President isn't around, she helps take care of business to keep us running! She also took on the role of student coaching both Overwatch teams, and hosting long after-school activities for club members.

After graduating from SLHS, Paityne will be attending Drake University to double major in Elementary Education and Studio Art!

When asked why she joined eSports, she mentioned how much she enjoyed video games. She also liked the idea of there being a safe space away from home for people to come and have fun doing what they love. She plans on joining an eSports club in college, too!

Senior Spotlight, Day Five: Chaselyn Watson!

Chaselyn joined eSports just this year and has been a very hard worker as part of our Mario Kart team!

After graduating from SLHS, Chaselyn plans to go to college to study Education to become a High School Teacher!

She joined eSports after her schedule opened up to allow her more free time to play, and, in her words "Mario Kart in general, are we kidding?" We agree with you!

Senior Spotlight, Day Four: Kristen Kuiper!

Kristen has joined eSports this past year and has been a very active member of our Mario Kart 8 Varsity Team!

After graduating SLHS, Kristen will go to college with plans of majoring in Graphic Design and Music Production!

When asked why she joined eSports, we were told she wanted to try something new, despite being a senior. And she loves Mario Kart! Considering she's also involved in almost everything music at SLHS, we are so glad she gave eSports a shot!

Senior Spotlight, Day Three: Ashley Peterson!

Ashley is new to the eSports program this year, and despite her busy schedule, she's been very supportive of our club! She joined as part of our Varsity Mario Kart 8 team this year. She really enjoys that she can play games with her friends!

After graduating SLHS, Ashley is heading off to basic training for the National Guard! After Army Basic Training, she plans on attending Iowa State University and heading on a road trip around the U.S.

Senior Spotlight, Day Two: Parker Partello!

Parker has been involved with eSports at SLHS for 4 years with the Overwatch Team- (4 years ago we only had 3 members!) This year he joined the Leadership Team for eSports! As well as participating on the Overwatch Varsity Team, Parker is one of our two Room Coordinators; this means he keeps the room running smoothly when the club President and Vice President are away. Thanks Parker!

After graduating from SLHS, Parker plans to go to college to study Computer Science. He's also been apart of the National Guard, and since he was a part of the National Guard this past year, he will also be more active in the National Guard after graduation.

He joined eSports after learning about what eSports could become at our school. A great club and safe space for everyone to enjoy!

Senior Spotlight, Day One: JJ Ussery!

JJ has been apart of eSports at SLHS for 2 years and has seen a large part of our club growth! They have been apart of our Overwatch Team for 2 years, and taking on the role of Varsity Captain this year with freshman Keagan Benge! They also participate regularly in eSports events, as well as play on one of our Mario Kart teams!

After graduating from Spirit Lake, JJ will be heading to Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, to earn a bachelor's degree in Social Sciene with a Teaching Licensure in grades 5-12. They also have expressed interest in interpreting ASL!

When asked why they joined eSports, they said:
"I joined eSports because I find competitive gaming interesting. I also think the community around video games is a unique community, especially in a high school setting."

The Overwatch Team met up one last time for a final hoorah to celebrate their achievements from the season. We couldn't be more proud of how much eSports at SLHS has grown this year! Not only with our group growing significantly, but our individual teams.

Many of our Overwatch players still meet up both during room hours and at home to play and continue getting better! 😊 Our Winter season from 2021-2022 is now in the books. Can't wait for next year!

Start your engines, everybody, it's Mario Kart season!! Our season kicked off to an excellent start in the end of March (sadly we didn't capture that first game!), and our players couldn't be happier!! We had a total of 21 members sign up, which almost put us at the max team capacity limit of 24. (That's awesome!!) This also allowed us to register both a JV and Varsity team!

We are so excited to finish the year strong with Mario Kart! Let's gooo!

We are so proud. Part of our eSports club at Spirit Lake High School, we have teams that compete against other schools across Iowa! This is one of them: Overwatch.
We have both a JV Overwatch Team and a Varisty Overwatch Team. Both teams have been working super hard all winter long and are coming up here on week 6 of weekly competitions! (Each game is streamed LIVE on Twitch, linked on our page! Miss the stream? Each video is uploaded to our Spirit Lake eSports Youtube!)
This Friday, all members from both teams stayed late to the school for our monthly "long practices." This was a few hours of hard work put in by our team! After having some team bonding hide and seek games, and some rounds of the game, they had a pizza dinner and spent some time collectively reviewing their gameplay, strategizing, and finding ways to improve as the end of their season nears.
Keagan Benge, a member of the Varisty team, took charge and led most of this meeting! Amazing work from everyone!! 😁
