How much body fat should you aim to lose each week?

This is one of those cases where faster isn't necessarily better.

A commonly recommended target for fat loss is about 0.5–1% of your body weight per week.

For example, if you weigh 160 lbs, that's roughly 0.8–1.6 lbs per week.

And here's the important part: that doesn't mean you're going to see your body-fat percentage drop by a full 1% every week.

Your body-fat reading can fluctuate based on hydration, glycogen, food intake, and even the accuracy of the device you're using.

If your goal is to lose fat while maintaining muscle, a slower, steady approach is usually the better strategy.

Think consistent progress, not rapid results.

We spend a lot of time talking about protein, calories, carbs, and fats.

But there’s another part of nutrition that deserves more attention: micronutrients.

Even if you’re eating enough calories, you may not be getting enough of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function well.

Recent research using nationally representative U.S. data found that:

• About 45% of adults weren’t getting enough calcium from their diet
• About 56% weren’t getting enough magnesium
• About 80% had inadequate dietary vitamin D intake

And potassium is another one to pay attention to. It’s considered a nutrient of public health concern because Americans generally aren’t consuming enough of it. The same goes for calcium and vitamin D.

So what can we do about it?

Start with more nutrient-dense foods:

🥬 Leafy greens
🥔 Potatoes and other vegetables
🍌 Fruits
🥛 Dairy or fortified alternatives
🫘 Beans and lentils
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🐟 Fish and seafood
🥚 Eggs

You don't need to eat perfectly or track every vitamin and mineral.

But if most of your diet is made up of highly processed foods, it can be surprisingly easy to get plenty of calories while coming up short on the nutrients your body needs.

Food isn't just fuel. It's also where your body gets the raw materials it needs to build, repair, and function.

Something to think about the next time you're deciding what's going on your plate.

Have you heard of “protein spiking”?

Here’s the simple version:

Protein is made up of chains of amino acids. When you eat whey protein, for example, you're getting a complete protein that contains a variety of amino acids your body needs.

Some supplement companies have added inexpensive individual amino acids, such as glycine or glutamine, to protein powders.

Why does that matter?

Because traditional protein testing measures nitrogen, and amino acids contain nitrogen. Adding them can potentially make a product appear to contain more protein than it actually provides as a complete protein.

So a label saying 25g of protein doesn't tell the whole story.

Don't just look at the number on the front. Check the ingredient list and look at the source of the protein, too.

Let's Talk About Bones...

Did you know...

The adult human body has 206 bones, but babies are born with about 270 to 300 soft, cartilaginous bones.

The 206 bones are divided between the axial and appendicular skeletons.

🦴 Axial skeleton: Includes the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage, and accounts for 80 bones.

🦴 Appendicular skeleton: Includes the arms, legs, and pelvic girdle, and accounts for 126 bones.

Let's start the month off with a new exercise. Give the Tibialis Raise, sometimes also called a toe raise or reverse calf raise.

It helps strengthen:
🟣 Tibialis anterior: The primary muscle on the front of your shin next to your shinbone.
🟣 Extensor digitorum longus: The muscle that helps lift your four smaller toes.
🟣 Extensor hallucis longus: The muscle responsible for pulling up your big toe.
🟣 Ankle joints: The front tendons that stabilize and protect your ankle from rolling.

As a bonus, it indirectly helps protect and "build up" your knees

Cheers to the start of another month in your fitness journey!

Looking for a new exercise? Give this a try, commonly referred to as the Dumbbell Plank Pull-Through or Plank Pull-Across.

1) Set Up: Start in a high plank position (on your hands and toes) with a dumbbell placed on the floor just outside one of your wrists

2) The Reach: Keep your feet wide for stability. Reach under your body with the opposite hand to grab the dumbbell

3) The Pull: Drag or pull the dumbbell across the floor to the other side of your body

4) Switch: Place your hand back down, reach under with your other hand, and pull it back

FACT: Muscles commonly referred to as a single muscle are actually made up of several distinct muscles or heads.

Take the triceps (aka the back of the arm), for example; it includes three heads.

- Long head
- Lateral head
- Medial head
> The long head is considered the hardest of the three heads to train and fully develop.

ALSO, the triceps consistently ranks as one of the top upper-body areas women want to improve. In other words, they don’t dig the “jiggle” factor, which is highly prone to a loose appearance when waving or moving.
