In 2012, the Union Baptist Association started the Backpack Assistance Ministry (B.A.M.) Program, taking it on from the local school districts because grant money had been discontinued. The mission was to make Jesus known to the families in the community by distributing nearly 2,000 backpacks stuffed with school supplies, Bible, United States Constitutions, and more. Doug Benningfield, pastor of Hickory Valley Baptist Church, contacted Carleen Benson and asked if she was interested in coordinating the program.... and the rest was history. Carleen was the B.A.M Coordinator for 10 years, pouring her heart into it. Carleen became a member of the YMCA Board of Directors in 2022 and facilitated a passing of the torch, handing off the B.A.M Program to the Y.

Carleen passed away in February of 2025, leaving the Y to carry forward her vision. The last two years, we have worked to ensure her mission stays alive: that all area churches and businesses work together in unity as servants and make Jesus known by serving the youth in our community. πŸ™

Yesterday, we distributed backpacks full of school supplies, books, food bags, hygiene bags, Bibles, U.S. constitutions, snow cones and more!

The list of people we owe thanks to is far too long for us to attempt. But in that, lies the meaning of community. It takes ALL of us working together for the greater good to achieve levels of service like we saw yesterday. πŸ™

Carleen Benson’s vision of this program was to make Jesus known by serving the youth in our community, and we hope we continue to make her proud. If you have not witnessed this event, you are missing out on one of God's intersections. πŸ’—
