We use Bracco Italiano's, historically used by Italian Nobel families to flush/retrieve game.

The Mafia welcomed Bella to the family this month. Bella is just shy of being 5, and comes to us from Georgia via Washington. She has been hunted over and also tracks deer. We will spend the summer letting her settle in to the pack. After some training runs and trial runs we will most likely add her to the rotation this fall.

We went on our first track of the season, Saturday during the velvet hunt. We will be tracking when we can this year. Work is pretty demanding but we will help others when we are able. Safe season everyone!

With the end of the 2024/2025 season I wanted to do a little recap. We were able to go on more tracks than last year, however not as many as we would have liked. Work continued to get in the way. However, you gotta make a living, and this is something we do on the side and try to make time for. We made new connections this year and I'm grateful for those and some of the great people in our network.

10/16/24 - Birdie got her 1st recovery - doe was shot at 20 yds, entrance lung exit gut. She found one drop of blood at 40 yds, the doe was 60 yds past that blood.

10/19/24 - Pootie with a recovery - entrance left side far back, exit right side in front of the front leg - doe went 110yds from shot site, very little blood at shot site and none on the trail. Doe crossed cedar falls and expired in a cedar thicket.

11/8/24 - Birdie with Mike tracked a buck shot early morning, damp conditions with sun in the afternoon. Buck fell into a pond at shot site rolled, got up and fell, got up again and ran off. Majority of arrow recovered in the shot area, with approximately 6-8" of arrow suspected to be in the deer (more than likely the front leg). Birdie worked over a decent blood trail for 250 yds, blood trickled to nothing and she continued to track 300 yds, no beds. Determined deer still on its feet and more than likely a non-fatal front leg shot.

11/14/24 - Birdie - tracked with Jenna/muzzleloader.. Tracked two bucks. Hunter shot buck one that morning, at shot site hair and a few splatters of blood. Determined bullet hit a tree and was extremely low belly/brisket Non- fatal hit.
Second buck was shot the day before and not found- went to the shot site and worked the trail to the first bed up the steep hillside.Birdie worked past where Hunter had stopped trailing the day prior. Continued to work around the hillside to the next ridge, 300-400yds total, hunter called off track, no permission for property deer traveled to.

11/16/24 - Birdie - Jenna and Mike - Muzzleloader
80-100 yd shot across a rise in a bean field, hunter did not see the buck's reaction due to the smoke. No blood at shot site. First blood 30 yds inside Woods-line. Tracked 200 yds through the woods, around a small pond, circled back towards a thicket, Birdie lost interest, took her back to shot site and reset, back around to pond, lost interest. Walked grid search no other blood, beds or matter found. Determined shot was low, deer was still on its feet.

11/20/24 -Pootie Jenna and Mike - Muzzleloader
Hunter called evening prior to track. Had shot a buck just before dark. First hit was back and low, Hunter was able to get second shot, High shoulder, buck disappeared over fence into the woods. Next morning Started track at shot site. Found gut matter 30 yds inside of the woods. At 50 yds Pootie got distracted by a bucket that had something in it prior (gut bucket or bait, unsure🤷🏽‍♀️). Let her continue a little way, wasn't interested and reset. Upon reset tracked across the creek at about 75 yds found a bed tracked approximately 200 yds down a creek to a property that is currently being cleared. Found where the buck crossed a stream. Hunter called off track. No permission to track on that property, no recovery.

Update: deer is still on its feet. Hoping the hunter gets another crack at him this season.

Heading to Cassville, see what Birdie can find.

Pootie-tha-vicious on board for the season. 110 yds of downed cedar trees, thickets of briars, we ended up having to back out and go around cause I couldn't get under or over the mess. She was piled up peacefully on the other side. Beautiful doe.

Birdie with her first recovery today!! 4 hour old track entrance high shoulder, exit high gut, one spot of blood. Visually there wasn't much to go on, but she took up the track and made short work of it.

The Pootie is ready for the season, we will be adding her cousin Birdie to the rotation this year, as Pootie is developing some pretty aggressive arthritis. Birdie will carry the torch into next season, she understands the assignment.

As the season is wrapping up, we just wanted to say thank you to everyone we got to meet this season. Unfortunately due to a lot of unforeseen circumstances this season we did not get to participate as we usually would have. Good luck to all of those hunting this weekend!
