How do you stay fit if injury derails your workout plan? Here are some suggestions: Can't run? Try swimming or biking (as long as they don't aggravate the running injury. Can't Swim or bike? how about lifting weights to strengthen the non-injured parts of your body? Don't focus on whatever it is that you can't do, look for what you can do. And here's something you can do no matter what the injury: take the opportunity to evaluate and improve your nutritional strategy. Just don't let injury distract you from doing something good for your fitness.

Congratulations to DRH Fitness Athlete David McKenna. He ran his first marathon on Saturday in South Bend, Indiana and finished in a very respectable 3:52:47, beating his goal of four hours. Here in Utah, the thermal inversion has trapped a layer of cold, dirty air in our beautiful valleys. It's not healthy to breath too much of that stuff, but don't let that keep you from staying active. There are fitness centers all around that offer indoor activities, such as swimming, basketball, racquetball, cardio equipment, and other options. So make a visit to one of them and don't let winter get you down. For personalized training plans you can do through the winter, give me a call.

Coach Dave received official word today from the Fitness Center where he trains that he won their "Winterman Triathlon--Ultra Distance." He was the first to accumulate 8,000 meters (5 miles) swimming, 224 miles on the bike, and 52 miles running. It took him exactly one month. He led from the start, swimming the whole 5 miles in one day, then getting the bike done over the next 16 days and the run done over the final 14 days. He also finished before all of the people doing the iron distance (half of the mileage he did) and all but one of the people doing the half iron distance (a quarter of his mileage). It's not about being fast, it's about being consistent. If you need motivation to stay active during the cold winter months, contact Coach Dave and let him help you develop an plan for you.
