Something to watch for during offshore transits

Of the 74 steel cargo containers that fell off a cargo ship near Oregon Inlet during a nor'easter this past weekend the Coast Guard had spotted only nine by Wednesday, and none had been recovered.

As mariners many of us are attuned to subtle changes (or lack thereof) in weather patterns - particularly wind direction and speed. When I awoke this morning and the wind was still blowing from the NE, I knew Ana hadn't moved much overnight.

So the headline in the latest advisory that she is "...moving a little faster..." basically means that any movement at all in a consistent direction shows some forward progress.

Ana gained some strength overnight (up to 60 mph) and is driving 15 ft seas at Frying Pan Shoals Buoy. The forecast is for slow weakening as she closes the coast and moves from the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and over the cooler shelf waters.

As you can see from the graphic, landfall is expected early Sunday near Myrtle Beach, followed be recurvature to the North and then Northeast.

Storm warnings are in effect from South Santee River, SC to Cape Lookout.

Stay Safe

All-Day Basic Weather for Mariners Seminar coming to Oriental - the Sailing Capital of NC.

Lisa and I used to own a home in this wonderful town and I am very excited to go back to this vibrant boating community.

On February 7th, fellow Meteorologist, Kim Curry, and I will be at Brantley's Village Restaurant teaching our fellow boaters how to develop a "Mariner's Eye" for weather. We'll start with basic weather principles and narrow down to local considerations for the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound area.

If you happen to be in the area (it's worth taking a drive too), we hope you'll join us. Call me at (910) 742-0083 or email to: [email protected] for more info

We are very sad to learn of the passing of Claiborne Young. He was a friend and mentor to many in the cruising community. The following was posted on his website yesterday:
Claiborne died this afternoon from injuries suffered in a serious motorcycle accident earlier today. He had been in surgery at UNC Hospital for several hours with doctors attempting unsuccessfully to stop internal bleeding. We ask that your prayers and thoughts go out to Claiborne’s family.

Since April c*c has been providing a weather and navigation brief to transient boaters every evening at Southport Marina. This is the final week and c*c would love to have anyone stop by and listen to Hanks final few nights of letting folks know about all the navigation issues as they transit northbound on the waterway and weather issues facing them either on the intracoastal or offshore. He has had great guests from both Active Captain and Salty Southeast Cruisers Net during this transient season!

A special advance announcement for our Facebook friends. If you're in the Southport area, we'd love to see you there!
