Hello everyone! I thought that this was valuable to share for all the ladies out there. I dealt with a nasty case of the flu last week. This landed right at the end of my follicular phase, into ovulation and the first week of the luteal phase. Something surprising happened, a post ovulation bleed.

Why does this happen? It has to do with progesterone levels. Monitoring this hormone also is an indicator of ovulation and healthy ovarian function. This phenomenon was due to low progesterone levels. Interestingly enough, a bout of the flu may actually decrease progesterone levels! This is important for both athletes and non-athletes as this is essential for reproduction but also keeping estrogen in check to prevent unwanted things from growing and proper fat oxidation. For men, if progesterone is affected then it very well may be that testosterone levels may be altered as well! (I’ll look into that further!)

For those coming off of the flu, it is important to nourish your body with key foods and nutrients such as adaptogens, B vitamins, antioxidants, and any orange veggies for their vitamin A content. There are many more but it is importent to get the body te regulated, increase nutrient dense food and extend ourself some grace, not getting back into training too soon.

It’s truly a great read!

I just found this. This was 2 weeks after I had completed my first Ironman 70.3, marking a milestone in not only my athletic journey but my health and business journey. I chose to commit to my transformation and accepted the process it took to get there. Question now is, what is stopping you?

I want to share this tid bit with everybody. A couple weeks ago I talked about if ketogenic diets had their place in therapeutic and athletic performance protocols. I broke it down in two a discussion on what the research has said and also hormonally when it may or may not be beneficial. From that research, it appeared that carb periodization was best and thus I wanted to give this a shot.

I undertook this during the last two days of my follicular phase. That is when estrogen is high in your body is more capable of handling stress. I did end up seeing results and was thrilled! (I was also SOO happy to have more fats!)

From there, transitioning into my luteal phase I kept it at low carb, between 50 and 100 net carbs, except for my re-feed day. I noticed my carb cravings increasing, my energy levels decreasing and my appetite being much stronger than normal. I wondered if this was an appropriate time to even be this low. With that I want to share some very valuable information that I learned. Check out what I found!

I have now had to increase the carbohydrates and listen to my body. It’s amazing how the body actually works!

Note: there is one correction that I do want to bring up. After your period there is still a three day period. Where your hormones are still low. After those three days, that’s when your body starts utilizing carbs much more effectively and you’re much more insulin sensitive!

Thought these were very valuable!

Are you open to learning some more ways to use integrative nutrition to accomplish your athletic and therapeutic goals and help you gain a sense of control of your health and wellness outcomes? Let’s talk!
