Before Judo Mate was an idea, its founder was on the mat putting in real work.
Technique. Timing. Commitment.
This is the spirit the Judo Mate was built on.

Gordon Ryan, after attending an IBJJF rules seminar, asked a bunch of questions regarding the legality of reaping the leg and leg entries within the IBJJF rule system. He went out and utilized his leg game and leg entries within that structure. He would enter the legs in the same way he does in the competitions where heel hooks are legal. The saddle/sankaku position position is still perfectly legal in IBJJF even in the kimono. The difference is you can’t attack heel hooks or attack the leg that is being reaped, so what Gordon did in this match against Patrick Gallo and if you notice at the same competition when he fought Yuri Simoes, he does the same tactic. He enters the legs to the saddle where he’s able to entangle the legs and takes advantage of the rule set by utilizing his leg entanglements and coming up to score 2 points for the sweep. His opponents think he’s entering the legs to leg lock them, but he is using his entanglements to use sweeps within the IBJJF system, totally taking his opponents by surprise.
