HISTORY

Creative Dance for Children, started by Ramona Batchelder in 1983 developed into a nationwide dance movement program offered in child care centers in various regions. Ramona opened the first Creative Dance Center studio in 1986 in Chantilly as a home office for the outreach program. PROGRAMS

The Creative Dance Center Company and Crew consists of approximately 75 boys and girls ranging in age from 4 to 18. The dancers compete regionally and nationally in Hip hop, Lyrical, Jazz, Tap, and Contemporary categories. Our studios have a variety of youth recreational dance and theatrical classes that provide a fun and safe way to exercise and learn and meet new people. SUMMER INTENSIVE FACULTY INTRO: He is one of a kind and is truly our family - Mister Matt Smith!! Matthew Smith

Matthew’s love for dance performance, choreography, and teaching began at the age of three, where his passion for artistic movement first began. He graduated from Houston’s High School of the Performing and Visual Arts, where he was exposed to a variety of dance disciplines. Matthew then began to assist top industry choreographers such as Mia Michaels, Braham Logan Crane, Lisette Bustamante, and Stephen “Twitch” Boss. He has appeared in music video projects with artists such as Macklemore, Sia, Beyoncé, and Jesse & Joy. Matthew has worked with Andrew Winghart on concept visuals including Pneuma and Blue Wave. His movie credits include Stargirl on Disney+, choreographed by Mandy Moore. Additionally, he has traveled the world dancing with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He has also worked as a choreographer’s assistant alongside Mel Charlot on So You Think You Can Dance. Matthew’s teaching philosophy is based on creating a welcoming and diverse environment that encourages students to be their most authentic self. He emboldens you to identify your artistic voice while also ensuring that you understand dance movements are a visual representation of the music you hear and feel. Matthew is also a faculty member at Artist Simply Human Dance Convention touring the US Teaching HipHip / Fusion also a faculty member at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and TMILLY TV in Los Angeles and a Guest Faculty member at BDC in NYC.

Lisette Bustamante is a renowned choreographer, educator, and mentor with over 30 years in the entertainment industry. She has danced alongside global icons including Madonna, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Ariana Grande, Missy Elliott, and has been featured in major commercial campaigns for brands like Gap, Pepsi, and Apple. Her choreography credits span powerhouse artists such as Pink, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and Prince. On screen, she served as the supervising choreographer for MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and co-hosted AMC’s Showville, where she traveled across the country mentoring everyday performers and helping them bring their creative dreams to life.
As a passionate educator and mentor, Lisette works closely with the next generation of artists through her signature mentorship program, Activating The Artist. Her teaching philosophy centers on empowering dancers to express themselves authentically, take bold creative risks, and develop a sustainable, fulfilling career. She fosters a supportive, intentional environment where artistic growth and personal transformation go hand in hand.

SUMMER INTENSIVE FACULTY INTRO: we’re so grateful to have Miss Olga back with us! Olga Aru

Olga Aru was born in Eastern Ukraine and grew up in Kyiv. She’s an alumnus of the renowned state ballet academy. Since graduation, she worked in professional dance theaters for 15 years internationally performing as a first and second soloist. Ms. Aru has experience performing with touring productions. Aru’s work “Dance on the Edge of Century” was represented at the 37th CID - UNESCO Dance Congress in Athens, Greece 2013. Summer of 2018 Ms. Aru launched an independent Summer Intensive Program which she brought into eight cities nationwide. Her short dance film “Isolated In Motion” was created during the early lockdown in 2020 and found recognition in several international film festivals. Feature film: “Montreal Independent Film Festival ”, “CinevoyageInternational Film Festival”, “The Lift-Off Sessions”. Finalist: “Sweden Film Awards”,, “Boden International Film Festival”
It has been screened at Takoma Park Community Center as a part of Shorts Night, organized by the municipality of Takoma Park, MD. Aru is a founder and artistic director of Aru Dell’Arte and teaching faculty member at CityDance DC. Through art, she thrives to create a positive, authentic, and non-judgmental environment. Constant exploration of movement, and non-traditional thinking out of the box - are the key factors of her daily research.
In the past season, she produced and choreographed eight shows. An interdisciplinary performance of Ode In Free Verse, with its world Premiere at DCAC - on March 19th and March 25th, 2022, in Washington, DC. Another showing at ATLAS Performing Arts Center  — on July 30th, 2022.
In late 2022 Olga produced and choreographed Christmas Legend - Modern Nutcracker Story.
Premiere at CULTURALDC’S Source Theatre on December 10th and 23rd, Washington, DC.
2023-2024, Aru staged and produced a performance called Life OfMovement, combining ethno-fusion on Ukrainian, African and Babylonian stories, taught two master class workshops at Georgetown University.

SUMMER INTENSIVE FACULTY INTRO: it is always a pleasure welcoming back the fabulous Miss Georgia! Georgia Monroe

Georgia is thrilled to be back at CDC this summer! She was most recently seen at DC’s very own Signature Theatre in Pippin where she was in the ensemble as well as the Dance Captain and Associate Choreographer. She has had the pleasure to perform on Broadway as a Swing in the Tony winning revival of Sunset Blvd, in the National Tour of Escape to Margaritaville, and at regional theaters around the country including Damn Yankees (Arena Stage) Cabaret (Goodspeed), Beauty and the Beast (MUNY), The Little Mermaid (MUNY), Rock of Ages (PCLO). She also teaches for the Children and Teens program at Broadway Dance Center. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Pace University in New York City with a BFA in Commercial Dance. Georgia has experience choreographing for film, awards shows, and stage; most notably the opening number for WBEC Pacific Awards: Honoring Excellence in Business and “In this Body” a concept dance video for a new musical by Zach Spound. As an assistant choreographer, Georgia has gotten to work next to inspiring and brilliant choreographers such as Rachel Dolan and Lainie Sakakura. Georgia is thrilled to share her love of dance and storytelling with the bright future of artists that CDC continues to cultivate!

SUMMER INTENSIVE FACULTY INTRO: How lucky are we to welcome back Mr Ariel Ariel Martinez !!

Ariel Martinez is an accomplished Ballet Dancer with over 15 years experience in classical and Cuban style ballet, as well as contemporary dance. He is recognized for his award-winning performances in several international competitions during his studies with the Cuban Ballet School. He has worked extensively with choreographers such as Annabelle Lopez-Ochoa, Jessica Lang, Mimmo Miccolis, Julie Kent, and many otherworld-renowned names within the industry. Currently, Ariel is a company member of The Washington Ballet.

SUMMER INTENSIVE FACULTY INTRO: We just LOVE when Miss Cami comes to share her wisdom and passion with us!! Cami Walton

Cami Walton is a dance instructor & choreographer based out of Hampton Roads, VA. She grew up training and performing at Denise Wall’s Dance Energy. As a dancer, Cami was a guest performer & soloist for the Philip Deal Dance Project and American Dance Artists. Post high school, she fell in love with teaching, and then joined the faculty at DWDE in 2005. She’s currently the assistant director & a resident choreographer for the company. Cami’s choreography has been nationally recognized and awarded, & her students have been accepted into Juilliard school, USC Gloria Kaufman School of Dance, NYU, Pace University, UNCSA, Point Park, VCU, & many more. Her students have also gone on to pursue successful careers in film, television, & stage. Cami continues her commitment to creating safe and strong dancers and has worked with physical therapists from Virginia Beach Physical Therapy & Wellness to develop exercises based on leading research in the dance/sports medicine fields.
Cami holds a BA in Theater & Dance & a minor in health & wellness from ODU. She was a member of The Children’s Theatre of Hampton Roads under the direction of Frankie Little Hardin. After completing her degree, she worked for Virginia Stage Company, both working behind the scenes on main stage productions, and as the CULTIVATE Artistic Administrator in the Education and Outreach Department. Cami also set choreography for Virginia Stage Company’s “A Christmas Carol.”  Her theater choreography credits also include: Generic Theatre’s “Urinetown” and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” Little Theatre of Norfolk’s “Company,” and Old Dominion University Theatre’s productions of “SOAR”, “Hansel & Gretel,” “Letters to Warsaw”, “Dracula”, and “ALICE.”
Her love of storytelling and movement combined with her for love for teaching and mentoring the next generation of dancers continues to fuel her passion for the art of dance.

SUMMER INTENSIVE FACULTY INTRO: we are so lucky to have Miss Julika in the house!!!

Julika Cuffy is a Virginia-based Hip Hop instructor with over 8 years of teaching experience. Originally from Hampton Roads, she has trained and performed with several respected companies including Culture Shock DC XV, Capitol Movement Inc., and CREWcial, as well as project crews like RAD, LED, and ChitraMoves.
Julika brings a unique approach to teaching —blending choreography with expressive movement rooted in culture and individuality. She has taught at community workshops, studios, and conventions throughout the East Coast, including The Kennedy Center’s National Dance Day (2023), N2Studios, Vessel Experience, BFunk Open Class, and as a guest teacher at The Hive (NJ) and Modega (NY).
As a performer, Julika’s credits include the Something in the Water Dance Competition (2019), Ladies of Hip Hop Festival (NYC), and a few festivals at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Her mission as a teacher is to inspire through movement—offering passion, authenticity, and community connection. Julika continues to use her artistry to express her voice and purpose, giving glory to God for the gift of dance.
