Yesterday, November 1st, was the anniversary of the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), "an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes." The GAA was founded in 1884 in order to preserve these unique Irish activities.
In celebration of this anniversary, we wanted to give a shout out to one of our local Gaelic sports groups, the Portland Gaelic Football Club. Here is more information written by the Club Chairman, Ryan Clancy.
"The first thing you see when you enter Maine is a wonderful sign saying, “Welcome Home.” The Portland Gaelic Football Club embodies this declaration with the constant goal of creating a sense of community and competition. While the club may be young in its origination, it has already had profound impact throughout the great state of Maine and even into the reaches of New Hampshire. Attracting all ages to partake in a historic sport, while bringing families and friends together under the welcoming roof of the Maine Irish Heritage Center or Rí Rá Irish Pub & Restaurant.
The Portland Gaelic Football Club proudly competes in the Northeast Division. One of the oldest and fiercest divisions right in the heart of Boston. Competing at such a high-level demands great athleticism and skill. When the club is not competing, we love to lift a pint and create an atmosphere of comradery that boasts Irish sport and culture here in Maine. If you are interested in becoming a part of the club, as a player or member, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or by email at [email protected]."
