Here’s a great reason to keep up your Basics membership: Longer life! According to two, large-scale studies, to increase our chances for a long life, we probably should take at least 7,000 steps a day or play sports such as tennis, cycling, swimming, jogging or badminton for more than 2.5 hours per week. The studies examined the relationship between physical activity and longevity and, together, followed more than 10,000 men and women for decades. Results showed that the right types and amounts of physical activity reduce the risk of premature death by as much as 70 percent.

When it comes to living a longer life, staying active may matter far more than what the scale says. US News reports that in the largest study yet on fitness, body weight and longevity, researchers found that people who are aerobically fit (i.e., how well your heart, lungs and muscles work together to supply oxygen during exercise) significantly reduce their risk of premature death, even if they are obese. In fact, being fit cut the risk of premature death by half for people with obesity, compared to those of normal weight who were unfit.

At last - snow! And we have some timely reminders about shoveling from experts and the National Safety Council:
• Do not shovel immediately after eating. Digestion requires additional blood flow, which competes with the added blood flow needed for the physical demands of shoveling,
• Push, don’t lift. Use your shovel to push snow to the side of the driveway or walkway, instead of trying to lift it.
• Lift smaller loads. Use a small shovel, or only partially fill a larger one. The average weight of a shovelful of wet snow is about 16 pounds.
• Protect your back. Bend at your knees and lift with your legs, not your back. A shovel with an angled, ergonomic handle will require you to exert less energy.
• Take it slow. Do not work to the point of exhaustion. Take frequent breaks.

Your hamstrings, located in the back of your thighs, are a part of your body that’s easy to ignore — until you make the wrong move and feel that sudden, sharp pain from an injury that could keep you hobbled for months. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to hamstring injuries because there’s a natural tendency for the muscles to become stiffer and less flexible with age. But if you follow the right fitness routine and practice a little moderation, it’s possible to keep your hammy healthy, functioning and pain-free. Some tips:
1. Always do a warmup
2. Make hamstring stretches a part of your routine
3. Strengthen the hamstrings with squats and lunges
