Hunter Clifton Fauria shot this giant non-typical mule deer with a .270 in Nye County, Nevada, in 1955, reportedly weighing 300 pounds after it was taken in Stoneberger Basin. The buck wasn’t measured by Boone & Crockett until 1991, when its 46 scorable points, 22 on one side and 24 on the other, earned it a 325 1/8-inch score, making it the biggest mule deer ever taken in Nevada.

Stevens Pocket Rifle.

F&S Reader Fitch 270 received this Stevens 40 1/2 Vernier New Model Pocket Rifle in .25 rimfire from his grandfather a couple weeks after his 13th birthday.

There was one condition. His grandfather told him that his own grandfather had given him the rifle, and that Fitch was to pass it down to a grandson someday. Once Fitch turned 30, he could sell it if he wanted to.

His grandfather died unexpectedly of a heart attack just a couple weeks later, the day before deer season opened.

Years later, Fitch learned that his grandfather’s story was not quite true. The rifle had actually been found by Fitch’s dad’s older brother in the rafters of an old milk house on their family’s property. It was probably used for pest control around the barn.

But his grandfather had apparently told people for years that he wanted Fitch to have it. With eight children and more than 30 grandchildren, Fitch knows there is no way he would have ended up with such a rare rifle if his grandfather hadn’t given it to him when he did.

He shot it a few times after his grandfather died. Today, the rifle is mostly waiting for the next generation, along with the few boxes of hard-to-find .25 rimfire ammunition he has left.

It’s official: This “grander” blue marlin just hit the scale at 1,260 pounds.

Capt. Damon Sacco says the massive fish was weighed on an IGFA-certified scale at MacDougalls Marina in Falmouth, Massachusetts, making it a new Massachusetts state record for a blue marlin.

The story of the catch is just as wild. Sacco was running an overnight charter near Atlantis Canyon when he spotted a huge dorsal behind the boat.

“Holy sh*t, it’s a marlin!”

The fish ate, exploded from the Atlantic three times, then headed deep. Sacco says half the spool disappeared in about 10 seconds.

“The reel burned in submission. The fun was over. She’ll spool us in no time.”

She didn't.

TRADE, KEEP, OR SELL?

A 1981 Re*****on Model 788 in .22-250. Wood stock. 24-inch barrel. Detachable magazine. Bushnell 3-9x up top—and according to the current owner, only a couple boxes of ammo through it.

The 788 was Re*****on’s budget bolt gun, but plenty of shooters learned that “budget” didn’t mean much once you got behind one. They earned a reputation for accuracy and have only gotten more interesting since Re*****on discontinued the line.

This one’s currently on the market. What are you doing with it?

Browning Sweet 16.

F&S Reader Jim inherited this shotgun from his father, who bought it at a base exchange in 1965 for $164. An Air Force pilot who flew B-17s during World War II and B-52s during the Cold War, Jim’s father soon lost interest in shotgunning and put the gun away.

It stayed there until 1993, when he gave it to Jim. The Browning came with a fitted luggage case, a 26-inch IC barrel, a 28-inch Modified barrel, and several boxes of “all new” plastic shells.

Since then, Jim has put a few hundred rounds through the Sweet 16 on clays, along with taking it on released pheasant and chukar hunts in Arkansas.

Now retired, Jim has more time to hunt and plans to take the old Browning after dove and quail in Texas next fall.

His father bought it more than 60 years ago. Today, Jim is still finding reasons to carry it into the field.
