It all began with Dave Hollenbeck and Paul Munarriz (may he rest in peace) at "The Round Table" at Tom & Jerry's Beach Club Bar & Grill. To celebrate 10 successful years the Dave Hollenbeck Perpetual Trophy for the Heaviest Wahoo was unveiled at today's Awards Ceremony. Because it all began at Tom & Jerry's, Cody Pace is having a shadow box built to house the trophy and it will hang in honor at its appropriate location.

The 10th Annual SPI Wahoo Classic weigh-in has come to an end. Some amazing fish were brought in today, and some great stories were told. Join us back at The Green on Sunday morning at 11am to see who the big winner will be!

The SPI Wahoo Classic story started with two friends who wanted to give back to the South Padre Island / Gulf of Mexico fishing community. The primary goal was to draw more tourism to the island after the kids go back to school. Secondary was to give back to the hard-working fishing community, and support local fishing conservation efforts.

Dave Hollenbeck was one of those friends, and the Wahoo Board of Directors gathered together Friday night following registration to present him with a gift. Dave and his wife Marie have moved back to Massachusetts, but will become Winter Texans! You know what they say ... once you drink water from the Rio Grande you will always come back.

Dave said he and Paul Munnariz (may you rest in peace) may have had a vision, but this group of people, along with others, are the ones that have brought it 10 years down the road, and knows they will continue to work hard for many years to come.

Thank you Dave and Paul for your dedication to, and love of, the South Padre Island fishing community! Your legacy will live on!

The 10th Anniversary SPI Wahoo Classic Fishing Tournament kicked off this evening with registration at The Green from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and was a huge success😀 35 boats and their crew joined together to visit, pick-up their awesome registration gifts, and participate in some good natured ribbing about who would bring in the largest Wahoo tomorrow afternoon.

Join us tomorrow afternoon at The Green from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm for weigh-in and a beautiful sunset!
