USC BJJ FAQ:
What’s Brazilian jiu-jitsu? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a submission-based grappling martial art that was originally derived from Judo. Sometimes referred to just as jiu-jitsu or BJJ, the focus is on using superior technique and dominant positions to control and eventually submit an opponent. This is done using chokeholds and joint locks to force an opponent to ‘tap out’ or submit. USC BJ

J specifically practices no-gi jiu-jitsu. That is jiu-jitsu without the traditional cotton jacket (the gi), pants, and a belt denoting rank. This allows us to bring in new students without requiring purchasing equipment. The majority of our students have no experience when they start. What's a typical class like?
* Warm-up
* Drilling 2-3 techniques
* If time permits: Live drills
* Sparring/rolling (once experienced enough)

Is Brazilian jiu-jitsu good for self-defense / fitness / weight loss / cardio? Short answer: Yes to all. Long answer: It depends on what you put into it! BJJ is a great sport to accomplish all of these things. It’s a calorie-burning workout that is a lot more dynamic and exciting than traditional cardio-focused workouts. All the while you’re learning a martial art that gives you experience with ground fighting. Is punching involved? BJJ does not utilize strikes of any kind. Instead, the focus is on using chokeholds and joint locks to force your opponent to submit. This still sounds scary. Will I get hurt? Like any sport, sprains and bruises do happen. USC BJJ works hard to create a safe environment for new practitioners to learn the sport. You won’t get dropped into the deep end and are allowed to go at your own pace. Do women take BJJ? Yes! We welcome everyone to join USC BJJ. Our classes are typically always attended by women alongside men.
