At South County Self-Protection, our mission is to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect themselves in any situation. We believe that self-protection is a fundamental right and seek to provide our students with the tools they need to protect themselves and their loved ones. The moto of our art is to "Keep Going" no matter what we are faced with keeping Hope alive.
We are a training group dedicated to exploring techniques designed and tested to protect oneself and others from threats we may face in our daily lives. Our self defense martial arts classes specifically focus on punches, kicks, locks, throws, counters, escapes, rolls, leaping, and weapons. Instructor:
Andrew Laurie, has been teaching high school social studies for over 15 years. He played football from the age of 7 through Junior College and began training in Okinawan Shorin Ryu at age 12. As a young adult he trained with practitioners of Brazilian Jujutsu, , Aikido, Judo, and Jeet Kune Do and took MMA self defense classes,. He began training in the art Bujinkan Ryu Ninpo Budo Taijutsu in early 2000. He attended National martial arts conferences, and has had the privilege to train with and learn from some of the greatest martial artists in the US and Canada. In the fall of 2003 began training under his current teacher who he seeks to study with as often as possible. In 2014 his teacher suggested he start a training group, which he did in the form of after school anti-bullying clubs. He earned his black belt in 2016, and is a perpetual student. Our program:
is an introduction to the reality-based battle-field martial art known as Ninjutsu. The Bujinkan Ryu Ninpo Budo Taiutsu tradition is over 900 years old, and preserves the physical martial art learned and refined by the famous mystic warriors of Japan known as the NINJA or Shinobi. The system includes concepts and techniques from 9 schools; 5 are battlefield samurai jujutsu schools, 3 are shadow or ninja schools, and 1 is a school developed by a female general for women and the elderly. The last school was a particular area of focus of our instructor. This program began as an extra-curricular anti-bullying training group for high-school students in 2014, after it was suggested that Mr. Laurie start one by his teacher. In 2018 he brought the program home to Wakefield teaching a few local students using nature as training hall. We offer a range of classes for students of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Our classes are designed to be fun, challenging, effective, and are taught in a safe and supportive non-competitive environment. Students train with training partners working with actual bodies performing actual attacks developing proactive timing and precise distance. Students also use training equipment to develop strength and speed safely with a focus on ergonomic posture. South Kingstown's Recreation Center activity rooms have padded floors, and we use mats to add even more protection when coming in contact with the floor for rolling and break-falls.
