Bangor/South Haven Heritage Water Trail The Bangor / South Haven Heritage Water Trail is a 21 mile canoe/kayak trail on the Black River in so The water trail is still being developed.

Please note: Portions of the trail have NOT been developed, Expect many obstructions and portages. County Road 687 downstream to CR 380 is currently very challenging with no way to exit the river until CR 380. This section would not be advised for family paddling. When completed, signs along the route will educate and inform trail users about local history and the environment. The trail will provide creative ways for people to enjoy nature and history while promoting environmental awareness, local tourism, and economic development.

A new Michigan law mandates that manufacturers label so-called "flushable" wipes with "Do Not Flush" warnings, as these wipes cause significant problems for wastewater treatment plants and septic systems. The wipes often clog screens and pumps, leading to costly maintenance and repairs. The law aims to mitigate these issues and reduce financial burdens on taxpayers, potentially saving millions in infrastructure repair costs.

Pathway Maintenance 2023 Update: Our tree crew reports that they have opened sections from the Basic Family Landing (CR 384) downstream to the Black River Park in South Haven and from Lion's Park in Bangor to County Road 687 (Robert & Marion Horton Memorial Access Site).
That leaves the middle section, from CR 687 downstream to CR 384 that is the section we affectionately call the "wilderness" because it is full of snags and obstacles and has defied our efforts to keep it clear. Safe paddling!

Update on pathway clearing... the contractor has completed from the Basic Family Access to Black River Park.

We have some good news to share. The contractors have cleared from Phoenix Road downstream to South Haven. Happy paddling!
