This week in Gymnastics History...
In 1991, the United States had yet to win a team medal in the World Gymnastics Championships. The Soviet Union was dominating in multiple categories, and would go on to clean up most medals in the Men's category. The women's category seemed likely to go the same direction.
For one 15-year-old from Texas, however, this wasn't going to intimidate her. Kim Zmeskal had won her first senior title in her American Cup debut just the year before, and she was on the hunt for more wins. Her performance in every one of her World Championship events reflected this hunger for success, too, and it wowed the judges. As each event came up, she smashed the scores, with vault, beam, uneven bars, and floor routine all netting her above 9.9 scores. But with the talent on the soviet team, would it be enough?
When the final tally came in, it was a close race. Soviet Svetlana Boginskaya managed an all-around score of 39.736, which was deeply impressive. But Zmeskal had earned an astounding 39.848. She'd won USA's first ever individual all-around World Artistic Gymnastics Championships gold medal in history, by just 0.1 point! She'd also helped her team to silver, getting them their first team medal. In later interviews, she called the win "a defining moment in my life," and it was also a defining moment in gymnastics history.
Nowadays, Zmeskal is still sharing her skills and adoration of gymnastics with others. She coaches in her home state of Texas, helping children learn and grow through movement. We salute her efforts, and are grateful to her for helping launch the USA's love affair with gymnastics.
