Bicycle Riding School

Bicycle Riding School We teach people to ride bikes, almost 3,000 so far and counting. Everybody learns, practically. Pe We have taught many people with special needs.

Susan McLucas and Pata Suyemoto teach people to ride bicycles with a near 100% success rate. Many of our students, especially those who learn to ride as adults, say it changes their lives. Our students come from all over the wold and many travel to Boston specifically to learn to ride at our school. Many of our students have been discouraged in the past, either by unsuccessful attempts to ride or

by cultural norms which don't approve of biking (often for girls.) Our beginning classes start at a school yard and finish on the bike path, with a graduation picnic by a pond to celebrate.

I'm looking forward to seeing one of my teachers, Ellery Klein, play with her band, Bow Tides, at the Burren in Davis Sq at 4pm on Sunday, July 26. She's the one in the middle with the fiddle Here's what they sound like:

The New York Times and Laura Motley really got it right with their recent piece on how to teach kids to ride. It also applies to adults, of course. By the way, I really need another teacher here at the Bicycle Riding School.

The six bike experts we talked to all agree: The balance bike method is the best way to teach a kid to ride a bike.

I am looking for a new teacher for my Bicycle Riding School (.org). If you or anyone you know might enjoy teaching people of all ages, 5 and up, how to ride bikes, get in touch with me. I'll train. A couple of my main teachers are leaving or reducing their hours in the fall. People are already having to wait for openings in our schedule. I'm looking for people who are really patient and supportive, fun-loving, punctual, strong, good with details and ideally have a car. I need to retire soon; I can't be running around, pushing people on bikes, on big parking lots for my whole life, as much as I love it. [email protected], 617-501-9125

Before the Lockdown era, BRS used to organize small group rides on the bike path for former students.

We're starting that program up again, with our first ride at 9am, Saturday August 2. This is specifically for people who have already done path riding with us in the past, and are interested in a low-key, social ride to maintain their skills and enjoy the summer scenery.

This first ride will be led by Sebastian, and is limited to six slots, so sign up quick! Let us know in your signup whether you'll want a bike from our fleet or intend to BYOBike.

If you have NOT done path rides with us in the past, or are concerned that your skills are too rusty to keep up with a group, you can sign up for a path lesson instead, either a group lesson, or a private or semi-private (you and a friend) one.

I'm so happy to have a new teacher for my bike school, Gracie Berman-Reinhardt. She's a senior at Tufts and a fellow activist. I think she'll make a great addition to our faculty. She's part of my gradual retirement plan. Here's what she wrote on our website.

Gracie Berman-Reinhardt grew up navigating the streets of Boston by bike and is passionate about teaching others to get around the city on two wheels.

Part of what she loves about the bike school is the approach to easing people of all ages into bicycle riding and building people’s confidence, no matter how daunting it may feel at first for the new rider.

She hopes that with more bikers on greater Boston’s streets, the city can become more accessible for people of all walks of life, and can be built to connect people, rather than force them into cars.

When not at the Bicycle Riding School, Gracie spends time advocating for social justice at home and abroad, including for the end of the U.S.-led genocide in Palestine.

I am very happy to announce that we have a new teacher here: Anushka Chadha. She's just started teaching here and she's great. The only problem is that I won't have her help teaching my lessons now that she's all trained up. But I'm really happy thinking about the future of the Bicycle Riding School. Here's what she wrote for our website:

Anushka Chadha enjoys biking around Boston and neighboring cities, and is eager to share the experience with all who want to learn through the Bicycle Riding School. She loves working with students of all ages and supporting them in reaching their goals.

She recently graduated with a degree in biomedical engineering and is currently working in the field in addition to being a bike school teacher. Outside of work, she spends her time discovering new music, cooking, drawing on the train, and learning to take care of different plants.

We have a new teacher at the Bicycle Riding School, Ellery Klein. After decades of teaching and performing music, she's thrilled to use her education experience to share her love of biking with our students. Besides being a great teacher, she is a leader in the bicycle and safe streets community, leading bicycle buses to school and advocating for traffic calming around her home of Medford. She is helping us to keep up with the demand from all the people who want to learn to ride.

I've just hired a new teacher for the Bicycle Riding School, Sebastian Banker. I think he'll be really good and he'll make it so that people won't have to wait so long for appointments here. He's liking the work, being sensitive to the different needs of our students and people like him.
