Inspiring day at the Cleveland Clinic Women’s Health Forum with my daughter, sister, and niece. Hoping the health data coming out helps women for generations to come. Also met one of my fitness inspirations, Stacy Sims, PhD. (ladies, her research and books are a must read. “Women are not small men”). This week I received another client referral to provide strength training to a woman with low bone density. Another woman with low bone density…. I’m seeing more healthy women in their early 50s who have osteopenia or osteoporosis (one has severe osteoporosis in her early 50s). If you are perimenopausal or menopausal, please understand what you can do to strengthen your bones.
—You start losing bone density in your 30s.
—1 in 2 women over 50 will fracture a bone due to osteoporosis. Half of us!
—Ask your provider if you can get a bone density test (called a DEXA). Normal age in this country is 65 which is too late—and sad.
—Be proactive. Your independence counts on it, so learn more and consider joining this important webinar. 💪🏼

1 in 2 women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is silent, and a fracture may be the first sign you have it. Unfortunately in this country we wait until women are 65 before a bone density test (DEXA) is given unless you are higher risk. That is way too late—you start losing bone in your 30s, this loss accelerates after the age of 40 and again in menopause. Don’t wait—push for a DEXA or you can also do private pay (I just had a private pay DEXA for piece of mind since my doctor would not refer me). Other ways to help your bone density:
—Calcium and Vitamin D
—Strength training and other weight bearing exercises
Take action—your independence counts on it!

Bone loss is silent and happens years before that which puts women at risk for a break, especially post-menopause where bone loss accelerates.
