Getting bounced around in the bumps? ⚠️ A really common issue is skiing with a rigid body. When the lower body is too stiff—or the timing is off—you end up bouncing off the bumps, losing contact with the snow, and giving up control of the skis 😬

What we want instead is better terrain management. That means absorbing the bumps in front of us rather than getting launched by them 💡

Think of skiing through the bumps with a low ceiling above your head. Keep the head quiet while the terrain moves up and down, forcing your legs to flex and extend to match the snow ⛷️

Struggling to stay balanced in the bumps? ⚠️ A common issue is a lack of upper and lower body separation. When everything turns together, it often leads to over-rotating at the end of the turn and getting knocked off balance.

Without that separation, weight tends to shift onto the uphill ski—slowing transitions, breaking rhythm, and pulling you off your intended line 😬
What we want instead is a stable upper body with legs that can move freely underneath it for quicker, cleaner turns 💪

The side slip drill is perfect for this. Start in a basic stance and sideslip down the face of the bump, focusing on turning the hips while keeping your jacket zipper pointing down the fall line ⛷️

Struggling to control your speed in the bumps? ⚠️ Often it’s not your technique—it’s your line choice. Skiing the most direct route puts you on the steepest part of the bump with a short, abrupt arc that leaves little room to adapt.

Think longer, rounder turns. Let the bump beside you act like a wall of a banked turn, guiding you back across the hill and managing speed naturally 🎿

The stem turn drill helps lock this in. Start across the hill, stem the outside ski, and extend it into the trough to build a wide, balanced turn ⛷️

01/16/2026

When both legs stay the same length, the skis tend to twist too fast, creating short, zig-zagged turns that feel stiff and rushed ⚠️

What we’re aiming for is a calm, rounded arc where the skis travel across the hill before starting the next turn 💪

Try the wedge pedalling drill: begin in a full wedge, lengthen the outside leg, shorten the inside leg, and repeat. As it clicks, the skis come closer together and your tracks turn into clean, flowing lines ❄️ Jay Sweet

Holding the outside leg extended too long sends your body up during the transition. That vertical movement throws off balance, makes your head bob, and delays early edging ⚠️

Start shortening the downhill leg sooner instead. As your body moves smoothly down the hill, your head stays quiet and your balance stays centred 💪

That stability lets you tip and engage the new inside ski earlier — smoother turns, less effort ⛷️

A narrow, tall stance might feel relaxed, but the moment the snow gets bumpy or inconsistent, it’s easy to get thrown off and lose control ‼️

Try widening your stance to about hip-width and shifting into a more athletic position. Aim to keep your shins and spine parallel — it naturally creates a strong, stable platform for your skis to react under you 💪

It’s a simple adjustment that massively boosts balance and control ⛷️

Want to feel more in control in your turns? ⛷️ Losing control often comes from a subtle waist hinge that drops the hips behind the feet. Once you’re on your heels, the upper body dives forward and control disappears.

Lead with ankle flexion, keeping your hips stacked over your feet so your body stays aligned and powerful.

The pole-clap drill is a game-changer — it pushes you into a forward, athletic stance and re-centres your balance so you stay in command of every turn 💪

12/01/2025

Feel like you lose control through the turn? Many skiers hinge at the waist without realising it. When the hips fall behind the feet, your weight drifts to the heels, and the upper body collapses forward to compensate—making it harder to stay in control 🫣

Try focusing on ankle flexion instead. With your hips stacked over your feet, your whole body moves forward as one solid, athletic unit 💪

A great way to train this is the pole-clap drill—hold your poles in one hand, reach behind you with the other, and clap your hands together as you make each turn-it forces you into a forward, athletic stance and helps re-centre your balance ⛷️

Losing confidence when the terrain gets steeper? Many skiers tense up and struggle to control their speed — which leads to hesitation and not fully committing to turning across the hill. Instead, picture a big clock in front of you and guide your skis to 11 o’clock and 2 o’clock as you make each turn ⏰
This simple visual helps you stay committed to each turn and keeps you balanced and confident! ⛷️
Think of it like following a set of markers down the hill — it keeps your direction consistent and your speed under control! 💪
