Four years and three months ago, this young lady decided to try the sport of fencing. Eighteen months later she advanced to the experienced epee class. She also decided to continue to come early and assist with the intermediate class. She has beem coming early ever since, leading the group stretching and footwork drills and working with individual students in drills to help them get better in the sport. I am tremendously grateful for her assistance. Her help, together with that of others that also come early, has helped extend my coaching career by allowing me to focus on drill presentation and correction. It is with great pride that I send her off to my old Alma Mater, The University of Maryland at College Park, to continue both her education and her fencing journey. Good fortune to you Sarah Yamakawa. Please return to visit and work out with us whenever you can.

We had a good Armory Class on Monday building a bodycord and Epee tester. Also learned a bit on bodycord repair, replacing an epee blade, and tuning the travel on the epee tip.

Want to learn how to fence taller opponents? Learn by example:

2009 World Championships at Antalya Turkey

Watch Russian Anton Avdeev take apart a much taller opponent in Spain's Jose-Luis Abajo, the silver medalist in the 2008 Olympics;

vs Abajo Part 2

He wins this bout comfortably with a combination of distance control, well timed parry-ripostes and aggressive closing of distance early to deter Abajo from fully using his own reach and attacks in Abajo's desired starting distance.

He later wins in a much closer bout against the 2008 Olympic champion Matteo Tagliariol of Italy.
