We teach skills, mental and physical development, a respect for the rules of the game, and basic ideals of fair play. The Down East Girls Softball League ( ) comes from a long rich history and heritage of women’s athletics dating back to the 1930s and 1940s athletic programs at Atlantic, Beaufort, Harkers Island, and Smyrna High Schools. Many of our League’s team managers, coaches, and play
ers are descendants of those young female athletes. In the 1990s, understanding the importance of girls’ sports, Barbara Yeomans started Babe Ruth Softball in the Down East Communities. Barbara would later become the District 5 Commissioner, State Commissioner, and Regional Commissioner, thus further ensuring Down East’s legacy on the sport of girls’ softball in the Down East communities, Eastern North Carolina, and the State, for years to come. The Down East Girls Softball League, using regulation competitive softball rules, teaches skills, and mental and physical development for the sport. We instill a respect for the rules of the game, and basic ideals of sportsmanship and fair play to young lady athletes ages 4 thru 18. Down East Girls Softball League is dedicated to realizing the dreams of all young lady athletes. Softball is, and always will be, a part of the Down East culture and tradition.
