In anticipation of National Invasive Species Awareness Week, Feb. 23-27, we’re spotlighting harmful species that threaten the Texas landscape. Keep an eye out for each and help spread the word!

🤠 Invasive species alert: Hydrilla
Native to India, hydrilla is a highly aggressive aquatic plant that spreads rapidly—a single broken fragment can regrow into a new plant, with stems reaching up to 30 feet long.

Once established, hydrilla forms dense, single-species underwater mats that crowd out native plants, reduce dissolved oxygen, raise water temperature and pH, and create ideal mosquito habitat. Heavy infestations can block water flow, interfering with irrigation systems and power generation.

Because of its serious ecological and infrastructure impacts, hydrilla is listed as a noxious plant by the Texas Department of Agriculture and as an invasive, prohibited exotic species by Texas Parks and Wildlife—making it illegal to sell, distribute, or import in Texas.
