šŸŽØ 2nd Saturday Open Studios!

I’ve been spending some time getting my studio organized (a work in progress šŸ˜„), and it’s finally starting to feel a little more pulled together!

I’ll have a few new paintings, several works in progress, and lots of collages — big ones, little ones, and everything in between.

Come see what I’ve been up to, peek inside my studio, and say hello! I’ve included a map of the building - it’s a maze!

Saturday, September 12th

There will be lots of other artists opening their studios too, so come wander around and see what’s happening at Art Hub ATX!

I rode past Stevie’s statue last week and noticed that someone had placed a sunflower in his hand. I came home with the idea of surrounding the statue with sunflowers, with downtown Austin rising up behind him.
It also brought me back to when I first moved to Austin in 1984. Stevie Ray was very much the musician of the moment, and his music was becoming part of the sound and identity of Austin. I remember seeing him at Antone’s when the club was still located on Guadalupe. It’s hard to believe that was more than 40 years ago.
August 27, 1990 was the night Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash after performing at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. His death was such a shock to Austin and to the music world, and his legacy has only grown over the years. Seeing that sunflower in his hand last week made me think about how much love people still have for him—and how his presence is still very much a part of Austin.
So I decided to paint him.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I have a new painting to share. ā¤ļø
I recently finished Stirring Times, another painting from my ā€œslinkyā€ series exploring movement, color, texture and the feeling of things twisting, turning and unfolding.
I took it to Austin Art Garage, which has been showing my work for many years, and was so happy to see that Jeremy chose it as his favorite painting for their latest staff picks.
He described it this way:
ā€œStirring Times by Judy Paul strikes a perfect balance between structure and freedom. Emerging geometric patterns and form are balanced by free flowing marks, vibrant bursts of colors, and interesting textures throughout. I feel like each time I look at it I notice something new. A truly impressive piece with layers of interest that simultaneously capture my attention and release my mind with a strong dose of curiosity and creative energy.ā€
That last part really resonated with me — the idea that a painting can capture your attention while also letting your mind wander.
Thank you, Jeremy, and Austin Art Garage, for continuing to support my work. It means a lot to have this painting find a place there.

Hi, family and friends! Today I’m celebrating my 65th birthday, and I’m feeling incredibly grateful.
The past couple of months have been filled with amazing adventures and time with people I love—Mother’s Day with my two wonderful kids, a trip to North Carolina with my sisters, nieces, nephews, and all our significant others, a backpacking trip through the Trinity Alps with my fearless girlfriends, and an unforgettable trip to Baja, Mexico, with my boyfriend and about 16 of his family and friends.
As I celebrate another trip around the sun, I just want to say thank you. I love and appreciate all of you, and I’m so grateful for the family, friends, and memories that make life so rich.
I hope you’re all having a magical summer so far! ā¤ļø

Lately my studio has been moving outside.

Since moving back to Austin, I’ve been riding my bike down to Lady Bird Lake with my art supplies and sketching along the hike & bike trail. It’s been such a fun way to combine two things I love — adventure and art — and I’m filling sketchbooks with new ideas.
I’ve also been having a great time cycling Austin’s trails with elementary school kids and coaching pickleball with my friend Allison Phillips and her team at Austin Youth Fitness.
If you’re out exploring studios this weekend, come say hello!

Merry Christmas to family and friends! šŸŽ„
A sweet, cozy celebration at the tiny condo—four humans, three doggies, great food, and a sunny hike to top it off. May 2026 bring love, joy, and many beautiful moments to us all.

Hello again, Austin. šŸŒ†šŸ’›
After selling the Lumberyard and closing a meaningful chapter in Smithville, I’m back in the city that has inspired my art for decades. I’m now in the heart of downtown, steps from the hike-and-bike trail — and feeling lots of gratitude, possibility, and joy.

My first night back was spent with my son, Paul Ray, who brought flowers and w**e and helped me toast this big transition.

Life is wild and beautiful, and I’m so grateful for all the support and friendship in Smithville and Austin and beyond, and the magical journey.✨
