GARY BURTON SMITHVILLE LAKE FISHING REPORT FROM GUIDE TRIP 8/29

White Bass fun, plus a couple limits of crappie!!! Sounds like a fun time to us!!! Thanks for the report Gary!

We headed up river first thing this morning. Have been seeing some giant schools of white bass busting the shad on points in the 3 fingers area. Area 1/2 the size of a football field just explodes. They didn’t show up while we were there this morning. Didn’t stay long though. A head hunter crappie diver, small bomber model A or even a bandit 100. Really doesn’t matter if they are breaking the surface. Headed back to the main for the crappie. Kept 30 fish. Our better fish came out of brush piles in 12 to 15 feet of water. The minnow bite was more productive than jigs but both caught fish. Most of our fish were the 9 1/2” or so with 8 or so 10” plus. Big was just over 11. Only kept one black crappie.

GARY BURTON FISHING REPORT FROM GUIDE TRIP 8-17:

Out with a couple for 4 hours. Caught lots of fish on the main lake brush piles. Never went under a bridge. Kept 30 of the nicest fish. We were throwing back 2 or 3 fish to one keeper. Most of our keepers were 9 1/2 to 10 inches largest was just over 11”. A few on the jig but most were on a minnow either on a tight line or under a slip bobber.

GARY BURTON FISHING REPORT FROM 8/14

Went out scouting for crappie on 8-14. Was surprised with how easy it was to catch crappie on the main lake brush piles. (with jigs). Would find a pile in 12’ to 18’ of water. Make a long cast and let your jig (1/16 oz) sink to what you think is about the top of the pile. Reel the jig slowly in. (Use like a Bobby garland baby shad ) the neutral and shad colors were best. The slab buster was also good. ( monkey milk). Must have caught 25 fish each in a couple of hours. Hit several different piles and most were good. Lots of small fish but could have had a limit of 10 inch or so fish.

GARY BURTON RECENT GUIDE TRIP REPORT:

Out at 5 pm. Fished main lake brush piles mostly with minnows. Lots of fish 12 to 14 feet down. They weren’t real aggressive would just kind of grab the minnows and hang on. You had to be patient or you fed them lots of minnows. We were fishing the area from Crows creek to little platte. About 8:30 the white bass started coming up. Kids had fun with them. Water is in the upper 80’s. Small cranks for the whites. If you don’t see them fish main lake points and jetty’s. Minnesota Bait has a great selection of those smaller cranks. Did catch several crappie on a 1/16 oz jig with a red/white/chart tube.

GARY BURTON’S SMITHVILLE LAKE FISHING REPORT FROM GUIDE TRIP 5/24/26:

Went out early Sunday morning with 3 people. Was calm and quiet, water 69 degrees. We fished main lake brush piles with minnows. Piles in 15 to 20 feet of water were the best. Most of the time we were fishing 10 to 12 feet deep. We would just tight line over the side of the boat or use a slip float to fish areas away from the boat. Fish were biting good but soft. Lots of small fish (8 1/2 to 9 1/2 inches). We kept 40 fish with about 15 or so 10+ inches and the rest were the 9” + or - variety. Were off the lake around 12:30. Boat traffic was getting busy.
