GARY BURTON’S SMITHVILLE LAKE FISHING REPORT FROM GUIDE TRIP 5/9/26

Father and son team. We started behind the Litton center looking at the dam. Lots of brush piles and lots of fish. Caught a lot but many were small. Most were 8 1/2 to 9 1/2” and most were black crappie. Minnows seemed to work a little better than jigs. Tried several other main lake piles with similar results. We headed up the river where we fished much shallower and did about the same. We did catch 4 fish over 11” still lots of smalls. We had 4 females, 2 had spawned 1 was dripping eggs and the other was ready to drop. I think the spawn is on the down hill side. I’m going to focus on shallow brush pile’s and flats in 5 to 12 feet of water.

GARY BURTON’S SMITHVILLE LAKE FISHING REPORT 5/3 and 5/4 GUIDE TRIPS:

Guide trip May 4th and 5th. Had 3 guys and we fished two days. Main lake fish were very uncooperative. Several small fish but few good ones. Still fishing a 1/16 oz roadrunner with a purple/chart body. Monday was windy so we headed north to get out of the wind. Caught some nice fish but just a few here and there. Finally hit a spot and caught about 25 in one spot. Can’t decide if it’s the time of day or the spot. Probably a combo.

Another day, another limit in the boat!

GARY BURTON’S SMITHVILLE LAKE FISHING REPORT FROM GUIDE TRIP 4/27/26:

Started calm and got very windy. took one guy out and he had his limit of nice crappie in 3’ to 6’ of water and not necessarily on the bank. Caught them on jigs and minnows equally. 10 of the 15 were over 11” and most of those were female white crappie. Most of those came from up north of the W bridge. A lot of the smaller fish were black crappie males. Still using a purple/chart body on a 1/16 oz road runner head. They are not everywhere yet I fish lots of spots to catch our fish. Cooler weather this week will slow down but prolong the spawn.

Coty with some nice ones from the bank earlier this week!

GARY BURTON’S FISHING REPORT FROM 4/25/26 GUIDE TRIP:

Took 3 guys out today. Was very windy as usual. Tried some main lake stuff but the wind made it very difficult. The jig ( 1/16 oz roadrunner)was more productive than the minnow. You needed to cover water I don’t think they were moving much. Cover ground and put something in their face. Most of the main lake fish were smaller males. Headed up north to try and get out of the wind. Definitely not on the banks everywhere but much larger fish. We had about 6 females (11 to 14 inches) and quite a few big males. Was not fast and they weren’t everywhere. We covered lots of water. Minnows and jigs ( purple and chartreuse). Darker colors. I expect it to improve daily for the next couple of weeks. Be patient and cover water.

GARY BURTON’S SMITHVILLE LAKE FISHING REPORT FROM 4/24/26 GUIDE TRIP:

Went out about 10 this morning because the bite seems to get better as it warms during the day. Started on the main lake and caught a few here and a few there. Was slow! Some nice fish but all males and mostly black crappie. Ran up the river caught some really nice fish a couple of which were big females. Minnow bite was better today. Not everywhere so keep moving.

GARY BURTON FISHING REPORT FROM TUESDAY 4/21 GUIDE TRIP:

Had a guide yesterday at Smithville. Wind was terrible and made us fish up the river out of the wind. A fish here and there but finally landed on a bank where we caught over 20 nice fish. 10+ inches. We’re biting minnows under a slip bobber and jigs equally well. 1/16 roadrunner head with a purple and chartreuse body. We were sitting in 5 or less feet of water and casting towards the bank. They are just starting to move up. Caught over 60 fish in the last two days and only 4 were females.
