The Fairchance Rod and Gun Club (FRGC) hosted the 37th Annual Hog Roast benchrest competition for the National Benchrest Shooters Association (NBRSA) this past weekend, May 3rd and 4th, 2025.
Fifty-one (51!) shooters from all over the east coast (and at least one from Canada) were in attendance for this event, during which the weather varied drastically, from heavy rainfall with varying and driving winds to calm conditions with sunshine and light rainfall.
Several new faces joined the ranks of the crew administrating the Hog Roast, including the new target crew supervisor Ken Evans, whose help was especially appreciated to make the machinations of the target change outs, setup, and teardown go smoothly, as well as addressing a backer motor failure that happened during one of the Sunday morning matches. The scorer Kebin Holbert and statistician Melissa Planiczka returned as veterans of the event, serving out scores and refreshments in kind. Long time benchrest shooter and record setter Dave Pike returned to the range this year as the Rangemaster, aiding the club as an experienced radio operator. Former Vice President Grant Milligan lent a hand in setting up the target backer system at the 100-yard line. Trustees Gary Hittie, Calvin Trader, and Joseph Koposko assisted with running for food, checking facilities, and observing for improvements to be made next year.
The community spirit was shown by exceptional support from the competitors in aiding the new FRGC President, Elliott Mazur, to put on the event. From troubleshooting camper power hookups to clearing the top of the 100-yard berm of brush for the 200-yard matches and many more smaller undertakings, the shooters in attendance were helpful and gracious. The new president understandably has big shoes to fill as he gets up to speed to meet the expectations of event attendees.
This year's event was marked by the loss of Jerry Ray Vansickle, former President of the Fairchance Rod and Gun Club and a staunch supporter of the benchrest shooting sport, who passed a week before the shoot on April 26th. Jerry's family was presented with a plaque commemorating his devotion to the sport and to Fairchance Rod and Gun Club.
