A small dry bag makes your day easy and comfortable. Here’s what we recommend:

~ Light rain jacket or windbreaker
~ Sunglasses (with strap)
~ Sunscreen and lip balm
~ Camera or phone - we can provide a phone bungee harness that wraps around the corners of your phone and attaches to your life jacket
~ Water bottle
~ Snack if you get hungry
~ Extra layer if it’s chilly

Keep it simple. Keep it light. We provide the rest - paddles, life jackets, and dry storage for anything you don’t want in the bag. We also have dry bags if needed!

Pack smart, paddle happy.

When ships dock in Sitka, it’s not just a stop on a route.

It’s a town opening its doors. Local shops open early, guides check tides and weather, and fishermen pass through the harbor. This place runs on real people, not corporate scripts.

If supporting local matters to you, choosing a locally owned kayak tour keeps your port day dollars in the community you are visiting.

Come paddle with us and see Sitka from the water while making a difference.

A couple weeks ago, I traveled to Glacier Bay National Park for several days to assist with snow removal because they received record snow fall. Typically they receive around 75 inches and this winter received 121 inches all at once. The staff at the park was quickly worn down and exhausted from snow removal. The park asked for emergency assistance from anyone available, so my boss at the Sitka National Historical Park and I responded.

Usually you can just fly there with Alaska seaplanes (they have these 12 seater puddle jumpers), but the weather was terrible so we had to fly to Juneau and then take a 7 hour ferry ride to Gustavus.

We spent the afternoon evaluating and planning how to help with their main problem, a 20,000 sqft roof with 5ft of compacted snow that would soon exceed the weight capacity of the roof. We ended up getting some structural engineers involved to make sure we wouldn't fall through the roof.

We spent the morning clearing a landing area so that we could bring up a snow blower. There were 4 of us digging out an area and were eventually able to bring up a single snow blower. Unfortunately, the snow was too compact and deep to be able to just run the blower through it so we had to break apart the snow and basically feed it to the snow blower.

After a day of this, we had dug a perimeter around the rooftop. We were finally able to get another snow blower up top and have another team working in tandem with us removing snow on the other side.

We spent 3 days clearing the main roof and we're about 80% finished when my boss and I had to return to Sitka. I received a few updates from my buddy in Glacier Bay showing the finished roof. They were so thankful that they were finally caught up on that and could move onto snow removal projects in other areas in the park.

🐻 Wildlife Wednesday: Fall Edition

As the air cools and the salmon runs slow, Sitka’s biggest locals are shifting gears. Bears are bulking up for winter, feasting on the last of the season’s berries and fish before heading for their dens. 🍂

It’s one of Sitka’s most powerful transitions — watching nature prepare for rest after months of wild energy and abundance.

Even as things quiet down, the Tongass stays alive in its own rhythm.

Tide Talk Thursday 🌊

The tides in Sitka are always on the move, rising and falling nearly 10 feet in a single day. This constant change shapes the shoreline, uncovers tidepools full of sea stars and anemones, and keeps life in the Sound full of surprises.

Every paddle is different depending on the tide, which is part of what makes kayaking here so special.

Mountain Monday: Annahootz Peak

Ever wonder about the majestic mountain that overlooks Sitka's forested shores? That’s Annahootz Mountain, and here’s why it stands out:

Elevation & Location: Rising to about 3,540 feet (1,079 meters), Annahootz towers over Baranof Island, located roughly 16 miles north of Sitka.

Cultural Heritage: Named in 1929 by the U.S. Forest Service after Chief Annahootz, a respected Tlingit leader of the Kock-won-ton subtribe who served as village policeman. He once protected settlers under a rival chief.

Geographic Significance: With a prominence of over 1,650 feet (503 m), Annahootz is a standout summit in the Tongass National Forest terrain.

From the water, Annahootz provides a striking backdrop with slopes rising from sea to summit. Seeing it unfold as you paddle is like joining a very real, very grand painting in motion.

It’s the kind of place where time slows down, where you can’t help but feel small in the best possible way, and where every day is a reminder of how lucky you are to be here.

Come see this beauty for yourself from the water. Book your kayak tour today at www.seakadventuresitka.com and experience the magic firsthand.
