Betsy, The Coaches' Coach Hi, I'm Betsy! I help coaches truly connect with today’s athletes, Gen Z and beyond. With you for the win,

Betsy

As a coach, communication specialist, and author, I support teams, leaders, and sports organizations through custom workshops, consulting, and keynote speaking. I provide executive coaching services to coaches of all sports and design customized workshops for athletic departments and teams. As a former collegiate coach I value the unique opportunity coaches have to positively impact the athlete ex

perience and work to support both coaches and teams in pursuit of their greatest success. Communication is my speciality, people are my passion, and working with others to facilitate positive change is what I do best.

Best speaker gift ever 🐉 THANK YOU!

For all the transformational coaches out there who feel it’s difficult to compete in the increasingly transactional world of sports, this one is for you 💛

Congratulations to and on a National Championship and to and on another incredible season.

To all who danced in March and who love the game, thank you 🏀

By now you’ve likely seen these clips from yesterday’s vs matchup. As someone who was there - in the stands, yes, but also behind the scene in year 4 with Maryland - I want to tell you what you don’t see.

First, let me clarify two things; credit & purpose.

Though I work as a communication specialist all credit for this moment goes to and - two people who made a commitment to building the coach-athlete relationship to the point witnessed by millions yesterday.

My purpose in sharing what follows is because,

1) too many coaches are getting fired for conversations like this

2) too many of today’s athletes are being labeled as “soft” if they don’t respond well to this type of coaching

3) because it would be easy for coaches, athletes, administrators, and fans to to write this moment off as the exception instead of a massive learning opportunity

I hold the invitation to go behind the scenes and work with a team throughout their season as sacred. It’s a privilege to share that space, and those conversations are private and will remain so.

Without breaking confidentiality, here’s what you didn’t see yesterday that I want you to know…

The relationship was built with intention. As a transfer, this coach-athlete relationship didn’t have the luxury of being built over years. It was built by two people who made the choice to trust each other. Not once, but continually.

This relationship was built through transparency and reinforced by consistency.

The relationship was built through a commitment to understanding what works, what doesn’t, and why.

ALL relationships have friction and conflict is a naturally occurring event.

The difference between friction resulting in fracture, or friction strengthening a relationship is each person’s commitment to curiosity and repair.

For the “tough love” coaches out there, you can still be successful with today’s athletes. All that is required is that you show the love before bringing the tough.

In yesterday’s game, and gave a perfect example of belief, trust, care, and mutual respect.

Earned and refined, together ✨

Today’s excerpt from “Kids These Days: Effective Strategies for Coaching Gen Z and Beyond” pairs the chapter on emotions with research from “Permission to Feel: the Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success” by .brackett PhD.

Whether or not you signed up to coach emotions, the reality is your athlete’s emotional hijacking will always be your opponent’s greatest competitive advantage.

Context matters.

Heated rivalry, legendary coach, men’s basketball… so it’s “normal” or “passion”. Neither the broadcasters nor the fans bat an eye.

But the same comment made by a female coach (with few exceptions) is often incendiary… a Title IX investigation, or player complaints about how their coach creates a “negative environment”, or how a coach makes comments “detrimental to athlete mental health”.

Highlighting this because regardless of how you feel about swearing, we’re kidding ourselves if we think the playing field is equal for coaches.

Gender bias is real, and it’s costing female coaches their jobs while their male peers aren’t held to the same standards.

Today’s excerpt from “Kids These Days: Effective Strategies for Coaching Gen Z and Beyond” pairs the concept of co-creation with research about power from in her latest book, “Strong Ground”.

Hi everyone, and happy holidays!

As you've likely noticed, I don't update this page often... I created it years ago because it was a thing one "should" do if one is running a business and seeking to serve a community.

For me, community means showing up for each other, and I haven't consistently done that in this space. I'm much more present on Instagram and Twitter and invite you to join me there in 2021.

Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to embracing the new year together!

With gratitude,

Betsy

Today was a special day ✨ The BreakThrough Digital Leadership Summit for Women in Sport is a special stage and it’s an honor to speak alongside women like Muffet McGraw, Dawn Staley, Sue Enquist, and an exceptionally talented group of individuals gifting their time and talents to move the needle.

Thank you to WeCoach and Hudl for having me back for year 2, and for the space to offer a creative (and cute) take on navigating difficult conversations 👶🏼
