Since 2017, Rise Youth Development and Soccer Academy — the Black Lions — Led by Instructor Kassahun Teka and Legend National team soccer players have been helping young people grow through soccer, education, and leadership right here in the DMV. Join us **Sunday, August 30, 2026, 4:30–8:30 PM** at 1 Veterans Place, Silver Spring, MD, for an evening of dinner, a live DJ, and an interactive interview with our honorees.
This year we're honoring the **15th East & Central Africa Ethiopian National Team Champions, along with special honorees Mr. Taye Wogederess (Exceptional Community Leadership and Generosity) and Mr. Alemu Mekonnen** (Outstanding Career in Sports Journalism). We are proud to announce that Ethio Silver Spring Soccer Academy is now officially Rise Youth Development and Soccer Academy! 🌟
Our new name reflects our expanded mission to serve underserved youth in our community, focusing not only on soccer excellence but also on mental health awareness and combating obesity. We are committed to nurturing the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—through the power of sport and holistic support.
We were honored to have Montgomery County Council Members Kate Stewart and Will Jawando join us for this special announcement, encouraging parents to stay engaged and lead by example. Senator Van Hollen also sent a video message, emphasizing the importance of our mission in providing youth with meaningful and productive opportunities.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us for this milestone event, offering encouragement and support as we take this important step forward.
Thank you to all who have been part of our journey. Together, we will continue to rise and empower the next generation! ⚽💙

EThio Silver Spring Soccer Academy was established six years ago to reach out to underserved kids in Montgomery county, Maryland. Currently it is serving 180 kids, playing in different leagues, represented by 10 teams with different age groups. To take the academy to the next level , we have organized a Fund Raising Dinner Gala on April 30, at the Silver Spring Civic Center.
The Academy is inviting you to participate in the dinner Gala by bringing family members and friends to help out in reaching its Nobel cause.
