Broadsword Class is back on the schedule for Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 3PM at the Siena School in Silver Spring, MD!

CLASS DETAILS: Moving forward, classes will focus on a combination of Smallsword and Broadsword material

WHAT IS A WORKSHOP-STYLE CLASS?
MacKenzie Broadsword and Maryland KDF are partnering to conduct Workshop-style group classes every other Saturday focusing on Scottish Martial Arts.

The goal of a workshop-style class is to focus on concepts and weapons in easily digestible chunks, just like a workshop at (for instance) the Maryland KDF Autumnfecht event. As this class meets every other week, classes do not follow a linear lesson plan. Instead, each class uses select lessons from multiple sources to gain a better overall understanding of Napoleonic Martial Arts using a combination of Smallsword and Broadsword as a base along with associated weapons. This means that students can take classes periodically over the course of the year, jumping in and out without worrying about missing “building blocks'' from prior courses.

I was privileged to teach John Ferdinand's Smallsword from his 1788 The Sword's-Man at last weekend's 2025 American Smallsword Symposium held at the historic Carlyle House in Alexandria, VA. I cannot thank Patrick Bratton (Sala della Spada) and Christopher Treichel enough for the tremendous opportunity, and a huge 'Thank you!' to Kevin Rezac of Round Table Historical Fencing for two amazing demonstration bouts of Smallsword vs Broadsword. Thank you to all the participants, especially those who traveled significant distances to attend!

Attention! There will be no Broadsword class at the Siena School tomorrow, Saturday November 9, as I will be a member of the referee staff at the ARFL Longsword Open at Top Tier CrossFit in Columbia, MD! The tournament has one opening if you need to get some competition!

The Atlantic Renaissance Fencing League is putting on its Longsword tournament, hosted and organized by Maryland KDF. This is a friendly Longsword tournament aimed primarily at HEMA fencers in the DC-Baltimore area.
