Gila Hike and Bike

Gila Hike and Bike Full service hiking and biking shop. The Gila Hike and Bike was born.

Ever since the dawn of the bicycle, someone has been listening to down tempo electronica at the corner of Bullard and College street in downtown Silver City. In 1986 a super hip Indianapolite named Jack Brennan decided to blend downtempo music, downtown silver city and two wheeled pedaling action and KA POW! Specializing in everything from high-end Trek Project One masterpieces to walmart flat rep

air, we turn nobody away and strive to offer the best customer service and mechanical knowledge in the land. Primarily a Trek store, we hold accounts with Moots, Santa Cruz, Yeti, Raleigh, Cervelo, Shimano and QBP to name but a few. So if you find yourself with a cycling itch you can't scratch, you should see a doctor, and he'll tell you to visit the Gila Hike and Bike in Downtown Silver City!

To help make space for some new shoe offerings, we're knocking 33% off of our Topo Ultraventure's. These are Topo's best selling model for good reason, and we've still got most sizes in here, now $99.

Carl the Flamingo just brought in a fresh shipment of goodr sunglasses yesterday, full of all sorts of colors and shapes for different faces & personalities.  Our favorite colorway name from this batch?:  "Mayor of Pangaea".

Yes, we definitely still have Oakley's and Blenders in the shop as well. But but, there's something silly & functional about buying a pair of sunglasses that come in a case slathered in flamingos, then slipping them into a stocking this season.

All of us here love where we live, but it doesn't hurt to strive to make things better, no?  Yes, we can attend all of the meetings, and contact the relevant local officials in the name of improving pedestrian and bike access.  (We do all of these things on a regular basis)  Pleading with local officials from our human-powered vantage that we want more;  more infrastructure for those of us that sometimes want to move around without a car.  For anyone that feels like we do, Right.Now. is starting to seem like a good time to voice those thoughts in 2 specific ways:

1) The easiest:  Without even moving from the chair you now sit upon, complete the NMDOT Active Transportation survey (☝️link in bio☝️, or, Google it).  You see those photos in pic 2 and 3 of this post?  Those are from the survey, and proof that our state is pondering heading in the *right* direction.  Plz plz encourage them to continue thinking in this way, and actually make this a reality!

2) Live locally and want better foot/bike transit toward Arenas Valley/ Ft Bayard/Santa Clara?  Come on out on Dec 10th, 4:30 pm, WNMU GRC bldg, for an in-person presentation from the NMDOT regarding the safety corridor along that hwy where they are actively seeking public input.  We've been hearing for YEARS how locals and tourists alike would love love love a bike path connecting here to there:  let DOT know!  (flier seen in pic 4 of this post).  They want input on how to make the hwy corridor safer for ALL users, and we know you have an opinion...

Yes, we are a retail establishment, one that sells and repairs shtuff; but all of that feels a bit shallow if we aren't also trying to better our communities.  What most of us really want is just to be safe, have fun, and help others...right?  See you out there...

After consuming too much of a good thing on Thanksgiving, then spending healthy qtys of time outdoors on Friday, we're back at it on Saturday. On that day, 9-5, the whole dang store will be 20% off in parallel with Small Business Saturday.

Yes, that's all of bikes.  All of the cottage-industry backpacks, the mainstream backpacks.  The unique ultralight apparel made by amazing small brands across the U.S.  The footwear.  And yes, even the freeze-dried meals :)

A little after closing hours on Saturday, we're going to push things around in the shop, then offer a free hot chocolate bar starting at 6:00 for the Silver City Lighted Parade.  Enjoy this amazing time of the year, and see you on Saturday.

You're still using floor pumps and co2 cartridges😂?  Know someone that still is, and pondering stocking-stuffer gifts for that individual?  Look no further.

These fit in the palm of your hand, easily slip into a saddle bag/jersey pocket, and sure do take up less space in the back of your 90s Subaru than a floor pump.  Maybe you've gone down the tire pressure rabbit hole, recognizing how important psi can be in the overall comfort/performance of your freedom machine?  Generally it's quite annoying to double check pressure with a pressure gauge, and for the love of god, stop trusting the generally inaccurate gauge on your floor pump!  Instead, the Trek Air Rush has a built-in gauge that has been third-party tested to be accurate.  Pre-set to your desired pressure, hit start, and walk away until the pump automatically turns itself off.

These sold out pretty quickly last go around, snag one while we've got em.

You know that sinking feeling felt when you shake a fuel canister, only to realize it feels "kinda low"? Not wanting to run out on your next trip, you chuck it into an ever- growing pile of partial canisters, or worse, the trash?

No need for that jazz, keep consolidating every last gram from those partials using a Transfer Device. Or, bonus points, up your game further by buying the largest canister size, 16 oz, and fill a smaller canister at home. A gram scale isn't necessary like in pic 2, but it sure does help for style points and precision.

We've got all sorts of quirky solutions for your backcountry needs on our shelves, this being just one of 'em

Light, comfy, unreal springiness, agile.  Yup, you can have it all in modern "Supershoes".

Frequently sold out, but now in stock here, the amazing La Sportiva Prodigio Pro is the shoe that makes you feel like you're cheating.  Perched upon some outrageously responsive foam that makes the biggest difference in this category, without that controversial carbon plate.  Meant for the mountains, this shoe is amazing in our rocky and loose terrain.  That dreamy foam with a space-age, resiliant mesh upper unlike anything you've seen before.  Tariffs are starting to brutalize shoe costs, but we got these made-in-Italy kicks before the price increase hit.  Everyone wins, for now.

Curious?  We got ya.

It's not that hard to find excuses to get out for a bikepacking trip right out of Silver City's backdoor.  As an owner of a bikeshop, testing new gear and techniques sometimes feels like as good of an excuse as any. Getting to experience the descent from the pines of the Big B***o Mountains, to the oak jungles of Gold Gulch is an even better reason.

Piecing together numerous local gravel classic bits into one satisfying 78 mile loop, the Gold Digger route was designed to be ridden on a gravel bike.  On Eric's ride, he maxed out a Soma Wolverine frame to run 50mm/2.1" tires.  There are a few washboardy or sandy sections, where bigger is generally better.  We are convinced that this ride would be fine on 40mm tires though, assuming that the rider has at least a low level of GRIT.

New fear and techniques tested.  Naturally, all in stock at the shop:

✔️Ortleib Quick Rack:  Game changer, easy to install & remove.  Lightweight.
✔️Salsa Anything Cages w/ DIY dry bags.  (inspired by more minimal Divide setup)
✔️Coros Dura Bike Computer - simple, dependable, solar-powered, "affordable"
✔️Bedrock Cairn 3D Pro sandals with flat pedals - just stiff & grippy enough. Gotta keep those high-desert summer chill vibes alive
✔️Fenix BC26R headlight - A bikepacking classic for good reason.   Reliable, bright, field-replaceable batteries.
✔️Six Moon Designs Deschutes Plus shelter
✔️LMNT Mango Chili electrolyte mix.  Keeping up on the electrolytes, fav flavor

We really, really like road biking down here in our corner of New Mexico.  Every once in a while though, the state totally fails us as road cyclists.  This weekend one of these failures led to a Tour Divide cyclist/racer being hit by a ginormous truck mirror and rushed to the hospital.  Luckily, he is mostly "okay", but his trip from Canada was ended and he's not feeling too stoked on the experience.  He was just 10 miles from Silver City on a newer stretch of Hwy 180 pavement, a stretch that did not have the shoulder repaved while the paving was laid.  Between the drop-off between new pavement/old shoulder & cracks in that old shoulder, it sure is really hard to safely ride in that shoulder.   Cyclists forced to ride in the main travel lanes are pushed closer to vehicles, and we know how that can end.

We intend to keep contacting the NM DOT, as well as our local representatives to encourage them to find better ways to pinch pennies. If you know someone with power or feel the same as we do, feel free to do the same.  This weekend was a sobering reminder that road cycling always has it's risks, but it's really damn sad when the risk is accentuated by poor policy.

It's hard to imagine being more grateful for the rain that has been falling over our trails, and more importantly, over our burning forest.  As the fire gets doused, our trails are regaining that tacky, Velcro-status that can only mean peak mountain biking season is upon us (ok, gravel too).

Is your bike dialed and ready for the best time of the year?  Tubeless sealant topped off?  Our service dept is fully staffed for the summer with quick turnaround times.  Need some of that unmatched, thorough service?  Come on in, and then enjoy having that bike in our landscape that is coming alive.
