2026 Yellowstone River Paddlefish Season Update
The 2026 paddlefish season on the Yellowstone River (yellow tag) and lower Missouri River (green tag) begins Friday, May 15. Despite a brief paddlefish season in North Dakota (five harvest days), low river flows on the Yellowstone River have reduced upstream migrations of paddlefish into Montana. Anglers can expect to find a few paddlefish in the State Line to Sidney Bridge areas opening weekend but few, if any, further upstream. Weather forecasts and river flows at Billings demonstrate a modest increase in river flows by the second weekend of the paddlefish season which could improve the ability to catch some fish upstream of the Sidney area.
The free paddlefish cleaning service will be available again at the Intake Fishing Access Site on harvest days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday). Anglers are also reminded to read the paddlefish section of the 2026 Fishing Regulations to be compliant with rules and mandatory harvest reporting options. One of the relatively new changes that began in 2025 was a requirement to report a harvested paddlefish before moving it from the harvest location or by 9 p.m. MST. Harvest reporting options were also limited to the phone hotline (1-877-FWP-WILD or 406-444-0356) or online at MyFWP (https://myfwp.mt.gov/fwpExtPortal/login/login.jsp).
Other changes for the 2026 paddlefish season on the Yellowstone River include a paddlefish harvest dashboard on FWP’s website and changes to the harvest tag options. The dashboard provides the daily and season harvest total, an interactive map with public access points and boundaries of the two river sections open to paddlefishing, links to USGS Stream Gauges, and links to other paddlefish information. The dashboard can be found through the FWP website here: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/48aa8a335d6b4852b11e3e26e66a5166
Beginning in 2026, paddlefish harvest tags options were limited to an etag or paper tag. The historically used plastic harvest clip tags are no longer available.
