We had the privilege of hosting a group of students from Northeastern University ahead of their summer as Orientation Leaders. With a focus on team building, communication, and collaboration, students took part in a wide range of activities over two days (with one overnight, including s’mores!)

Today we were thrilled to host a great group of 5th graders from Sunderland Elementary School! The water levels at Lake Wyola are finally returning to winter levels after dam repairs, so we were able to lead the students in our raft-building activity. The perfect experience on a hot day; students worked on collaboration, communication, and teamwork skills while building and then paddling their rafts. We ended the day with our Zipline!

Every year this pair of Pink Lady’s Slippers buds just below one of our cabins. Last year, visiting porcupines nibbled the buds before they got a chance to bloom. Other signs of porcupines include stripped bark on the first 3 feet or so of young trees (as they access the nutritious inner bark) and the rare sighting of one around Morse Hill when it’s very quiet and the kids have gone home for the day.

There are spotted salamander eggs in the vernal pool again this Spring, but the pool’s water level is lower than we’ve seen in the last few years.

We wouldn’t mind a few rainy days to keep it filled long enough for the next generation of salamanders to hatch!

While getting the ropes course ready for another season of awesome outdoor programs, we couldn’t help but notice all the huge piles of pine cones throughout our woods. Who created them?
These piles of pine cone scales and cores are called a midden, and they are created by red squirrels! Middens can be up to a foot deep and ensure a good supply for red squirrels to last the whole winter.

With 5 kits, the Morse Hill fox family is busy all of the time.

Red foxes usually have between 4-6 kits, and they stay with their parents until somewhere around 7 months old.

It's best to observe wildlife from a distance; we're being very careful and intentional when we check this camera deep in the woods!

Did you know that red fox kits are born with a charcoal grey coat? Somewhere around 5 weeks of age, kits grow a sandy colored coat to better blend in with their sandy den site. How old do you think these Morse Hill fox kits are?

Bonus: Can you spot Mom?
