For beginners, one of the easiest ways to set up a spinning back kick is by using simple distance controls.

If I can touch my opponent’s forehead with my lead hand, I know I’m in range. I also use an inside leg kick as a range finder—kick, put the foot down, spin, and fire.

Learn the distance first, and the technique becomes much easier to land. 👊🥋🔥

When I’m sparring in the dojo or even watching high level competition in the cage, I often use the inside leg kick the same way a boxer uses a jab.

It’s a great tool for gathering information. I’m reading reactions, seeing how my opponent moves, checking their balance, timing, and habits. Sure, a powerful inside leg kick can do damage, but often its value is in what it reveals.

It also works as a feint, disrupts rhythm, and helps establish range. Sometimes those small touches early in a fight tell you everything you need to know about the person standing across from you.

The basics done well win fights. 🥋🔥

A big part of becoming a great fighter isn’t just power, it’s control.
In this drill, I’m throwing fast, explosive kicks with just enough contact to demonstrate accuracy and distance management. Anyone can swing hard, but true skill is being able to place a strike exactly where you want it, with the amount of power you choose.
If I can control a kick to the head and barely touch the target, imagine the power available when it’s time to go full contact. Control comes first. Then we scale up the intensity, speed, and power as training demands.
Speed without control is reckless. Power with control is mastery. 👊🥋🔥
