A big part of becoming a great fighter isn’t just power, it’s control.
In this drill, I’m throwing fast, explosive kicks with just enough contact to demonstrate accuracy and distance management. Anyone can swing hard, but true skill is being able to place a strike exactly where you want it, with the amount of power you choose.
If I can control a kick to the head and barely touch the target, imagine the power available when it’s time to go full contact. Control comes first. Then we scale up the intensity, speed, and power as training demands.
Speed without control is reckless. Power with control is mastery. 👊🥋🔥

One of my go to combinations in sparring is simple, fast, and effective:

Left hook to the head.
Right straight punch.
Left body shot.
Right roundhouse kick to the top of the thigh.

Nothing fancy. Just solid fundamentals chained together with good timing and commitment.

Too many people spend their time searching for the perfect technique while overlooking the basics that win fights. The athletes who consistently land strikes and control exchanges are usually the ones who have mastered the fundamentals and can execute them under pressure.

Basics don’t fail when the adrenaline hits. Basics don’t disappear when you’re tired. Basics win fights. 🥊🔥

What is your favorite go to combination in sparring?

Consistency. Discipline. Focus. Persistence. Relentlessness.

These qualities have been some of the cornerstones of everything I’ve accomplished in life.

The truth is that most people never reach their full potential, not because they lack talent, intelligence, or opportunity. They fall short because they stop when things become difficult, inconvenient, or uncomfortable.

Success demands more.

It requires showing up when you don’t feel like it. It requires staying focused when distractions are everywhere. It requires persistence when progress is slow and relentless effort when others have already quit.

The gap between where you are and what you’re capable of becoming is often determined by your willingness to keep going when everyone else stops.

Set your standards high. Refuse to settle. Demand more from yourself than anyone else ever will.

Your potential is far greater than you think. The question is whether you’re willing to do what it takes to unlock it. 🔥🥋

Front snap kicks come in FAST. ⚡

Many times there isn’t enough time to catch the kick. Instead, I pull my hips back, hollow out my stomach, and let the kick miss by inches. From there, I immediately redirect the leg away from me and flow right into the sweep.

It’s not about strength. It’s about timing, distance, and staying relaxed under pressure. 👊🔥

What are your thoughts on this defensive option?

Most people want the result.

Few people want the process.

The early mornings.
The sore muscles.
The setbacks.
The failures.
The sacrifices.
The days when motivation is nowhere to be found.

Success isn’t built on motivation. It’s built on discipline. It’s built on showing up when you don’t feel like it. It’s built on doing the hard things over and over again until they become part of who you are.

The path isn’t supposed to be easy.

That’s what makes it worth walking.

DO HARD THINGS. 👊🔥

One of my favorite ways to set up combinations is with a short, explosive Superman punch. When it’s quick and sharp, it often lands and creates openings for everything that follows.

In this drill, I flow from the Superman punch into hand combinations, drop levels for a body shot, then transition into a spinning back kick. The key is keeping your hands active and not letting them fall back to your sides between techniques.

I believe the spinning back kick is a weapon every martial artist should develop. When timed correctly, it’s powerful, fast, and can completely change the momentum of an exchange.

Do you have a spinning back kick in your game yet? 👊🔥

Come watch what a coaching sparring session looks like at The Phoenix Way. 🥋🔥

These sessions are slow, technical, and focused on learning. We coach in the moment, helping students recognize opportunities, make adjustments, and develop both their physical and mental game.

Every fighter is different, so the coaching is different too. The goal is simple: help them see what they’re capable of and bring out their best.
