One arm kettle ball rows is an amazing exercise for tennis players. Keep your back straight, pull with your elbows, and breathe consciously. Tennis is a one arm dominant sport. So it is very important that you incorporate single arm/leg training into your workouts to keep the body as even as possible.

An effective singles serve tactic on the deuce side is the Tee serve then an inside out forehand to the add side. To defend against this, learn and master the inside out backhand return. It will force your opponent to have to change direction on the forehand (a very difficult thing to do). It will also keep your opponent honest about running around his backhand after the serve. This opens up the inside in backhand return to your opponents backhand.

The number 1 way to improve your tennis game is to study the best players in the world. Look at their form. Look at the way they walk. Look at their body language. Look at their feet. Look at their knees. Look at the their mental demeanor.

Next time you play, be them. After every point ask yourself this question: What would Rafa do? (Or whoever you happen to idolize). Then do it. Each time you do it, you will be building the chemistry to make yourself that person.

If you missed the women’s final, watch the men’s final tomorrow. Its on tomorrow at 9 AM. Rafa vs. Djokovic. Two of the best players to ever do it. Whose watching?!

As a tennis player, look for as much eustress as possible while completely avoiding distress. Distress refers to harmful stimuli that makes you weaker, less confident, and less able. Overtraining, binge eating on unhealthy food, criticizing your opponent when you think he/she made a bad call, being in a state of negativity after you lose a match, being in a state of tension before your match, are all examples of distress.
Eustress, on the other hand, is stress that is healthy (“EU” in Greek means healthy). Doing mobility work, doing shadow box swings, taking cold showers, visualizing success, reading inspiring books, doing different breathing techniques, lifting, sprinting, and yoga are all examples of eustress. Successful tennis players embrace eustress because they know eustress is the secret to growth. Create as much eustress as you can and watch your tennis game grow.

I am changing the name to The Win-Win Tennis Academy because this academy is not about me but is rather about a new way of approaching the game of tennis. That approach is to think win-win, to think mutual support, to always ask “how can I support both myself and others in a given situation” because thinking win-win will always make you a WINNER and thinking win-lose will always make you a LOSER. This is very well illustrated in my life to date.
From age 10 to 22, I wanted to be the best tennis player in the world. To accomplish this goal, I thought I had to operate from a win-lose mindset. I tried to train harder than everyone else which led to injuries. I put a lot of pressure on myself to win which led to anxiety and tightness. Sometimes, I would call a ball out when I saw the ball in which led to enemies. This win-lose approach prevented me from accomplishing my goal and caused me a great amount of unnecessary pain.
Law school was a big awakening for me. My first semester, without even realizing it, I operated from a win-win mindset. I studied hard but I also made time for rest. My attitude was one of curiosity and I studied just for the love of learning. I gave students my notes and in return they gave me their notes. Before my final exams, I did breathing and visualization techniques to calm down and focus. I had a very peaceful and fun semester.
When I found out that I finished #2 in my class, I got this overwhelming feeling of pride. That false feeling of pride led me back into a win-lose mindset. During my second semester of law school, I took no days off. Instead of studying with curiosity, I studied with angst. I refused to help my classmates, so I got no help in return. When final exams approached, I was so burnt out and stressed out that I could not put in the necessary work. I had a miserable semester and dropped to #11 in my class.
Those experiences led me to realize that thinking win-win creates unlimited happiness and success for everyone. Thus, my goal is to create an academy where tennis players are taught to think win-win so that they can avoid the pitfalls i fell into and reach their full potential in tennis and life.

I see unathletic players beat very athletic players all the time. I see this from the junior level all the way to the Pro level. How is this possible? Of course, its possible because of the mind. Simply put, on those days, the less athletic players were in better control of their minds. They were able to make their mind more STILL. They were able to make their mind more POSITIVE. They were able to keep their minds more FOCUSED on the PROCESS of winning.

The first thing to understand about the mind is that the unwatched mind tends to be very negative and gravitates to the past and future. We do want this. Negativity creates more negativity and the past and future are irrelevant to what you need to do NOW to win. Thankfully, this tendency can be stopped by (1) disassociating from the negative thoughts that the mind is producing (being the watcher) and (2) replacing the negative thoughts and feeling with positive thoughts and feelings.

Here is an example. You are serving, have game point, and miss an easy overhead. Negative thoughts creep in. “My overhead is so bad.” “He is such a pusher” “Its so hot out. I do not really want to play.” If you do not disassociate/watch these negative thoughts, then these thoughts will take you over and become you. You will be identified with them and act them out. Your overhead will continue to be bad, you will dislike your opponent, and you will not feel like playing. A recipe for disaster.

It is your job to become the alchemist. Watch these negative thoughts. Know that they are there. Do not judge them. Just watch them as an interested third person observer. Watching your thoughts breaks the identification so that they can no longer act through you and control you.

Then, change them. Feel as much love for yourself as possible. Say and feel some positive affirmations. Give the biggest smile you can possibly give. Then focus on the present moment. Feel each step you walk. Go to your towel. Feel the softness of the towel as it wipes away your sweat. Formulate a strategy for your next serve and chase every single ball down with an open heart.
This is the way to upsets, the way of winning, the way of the alchemist.

A huge part of tennis is your state of consciousness. When you are playing well you will notice that your energy is high yet at the same time your relaxed. Having high energy yet being calm is something you can control. The easiest way to get there pre-match is through the breathe. Take slow long breathes before you play. The slower and longer the better. When you do this you are literally changing the biochemistry of your body to get you in a zen like state for your match.

On your overheads try your best to get the behind the ball. It will allow for more effortless power and will increase your chances of hitting the right contact point which is 45 degrees in front of you.
