We’re taking it back to 1980 when seventeen-year-old David Sims, a member of the Joliet JETS YMCA Swim Team coached by Tim Hill, qualified for the Summer Olympics in the 1500-meter freestyle. Unfortunately, the United States’ boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games prevented David from competing on the World Stage.

We are also proud to share that last week Coach Hill was inducted into the American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Coach Hill, and thank you for the lasting impact you’ve made on generations of swimmers and the Joliet community! With the school year underway, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA is excited to remind families that registration is now open for YMCA Days Out of School programs!

YMCA Days Out of School (DOS) are offered at each of our full-facility branches for children when school is not in session. Whether it’s an Institute Day or Holiday Break, kids are invited to join the Y and students from all of our Kid Zone sites for a day of fun and adventure.

We are excited to continue our centennial spotlight series with YMCA Board Member Dan Stevenson! Dan served as Greater Joliet Area Board Chair from 2018-19 and has been a strong supporter of the YMCA Gala and Mission Strong Golf Classic, helping to ensure nobody is turned away from the Y due to the inability to pay. Dan says one of his favorite Y memories remains seeing his daughter experience YMCA summer camp as a counselor.

"She was hesitant to work with the kids and did not realize the impact she was having on them until she returned from vacation and had one of the young girls run up shouting 'Ms. Meg!' and gave her a huge hug," Dan said. "Regardless of what external factors impact us, family remains the center for everyone at the Y. Having a place/entity to help families focus on positive interactions, activities, and relationships in a safe space is key."

Our centennial spotlight series continues today with Howard Wright! Howard is a dedicated volunteer serving on the Greater Joliet Area YMCA Board of Directors as well as the Joliet Community YMCA Advisory Council. In addition to providing invaluable leadership to the Y, he has also been a regular sponsor of YMCA youth sports leagues and fundraising events.

"I think the Y's biggest strength is the ability to serve the youth in our community, particularly those who may not otherwise have access to affordable daycare and recreational programming. The Y is a diverse and welcoming place for all, and it's impact on children and families spans generations. Our next 100 years will be even better than our first 100 years!"
