Thank you Chuck for the wonderful poem!
Dear Ensigneers, In honor of all of us who have lost a main halyard either just before or during racing, and most especially to honor Stijf Kop. George, Ann and crew who suffered same the last day of racing in this year's Ensign Nationals, I offer you the following ode:
UNFINISHED SYMPHONY
Losing your main halyard is like an unfinished symphony
especially
in a National Championship, or at any other time ,,, it ain't sublime!
It's like losing your mind
or some other kind
of feeling that such hardships bring
such as Schubert not finishing the last two movements of his unfinished symphony,
or Massive Attack's lament about unrequited love in their Unfinished Symphony.
But what is better by far than thinking of it as an unfinished symphony
is to continue to enjoy and learn from that race
no matter your place in the race.
It's a much better place by far to be if you think of it differently.
Because as Alanis sang, what is better is that we learn,
because when you race, you learn, and when you live, you learn,
and when you cry, you learn, and when you lose you learn,
and when you scream, you learn. So it's better to burn to learn
than to lament about one's unfinished symphony!
It makes us ready to be free to learn new stuff brilliantly!
And congratulations again to Joya, Tom, Molly and crew for their 7th place overall in this year's Ensign Nationals!
Best to all, Chuck
