Shippensburg Community Park and Recreation Development page for the Shippensburg Community Park and Recreation Authority

The Shippensburg Community Parks and Recreation Authority (SCPRA) was recently incorporated for the purpose of providing positive, meaningful and quality recreational programs, activities and facilities that will encourage and promote a healthy and growing community. We are an independent Authority that is very much invested in inviting community input to help us create a recreational program that will serve all members of our community. We would like to invite the community to our monthly meetings (first Thursday of the Month).

Dykeman Spring Nature Park 🪶

The allure of the ‘Hatch House’ dates back to the 1870’s and eventually the spring and surrounding land was purchased by the Shippensburg Borough in 1968.

Gradually it was expanded into a 56-acre park, known for its ‘Duck Pond’, offering an outdoor oasis encompassing history and a natural habitat.

Nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, historians, trail explorers, environmental and ecological experts all take delight in this unique landscape.

Plus, having a nature-park right in town provides an opportunity for locals to enjoy a shortcut to passive recreation interests without the travel — and creates a possibility for the SCPRA to offer activities and programs related to eduction, leisure, and conservation.

GET INVOLVED!

If you’re looking to help or become more engaged in the community you can join a local volunteer network — like the Friends of Shippensburg Community Parks.

The FSCP group formed in 2023 and is getting more active, hoping to build a bigger presence and make a positive impact on parks in the greater Shippensburg area.

For more information on how to connect with its members, reach out to [email protected].

The SCPRA is in the process of helping to extend the rail trail from Ship Station to Orrstown Road.

Director Josh Mitchell, who oversees the project for the Park Authority, said — “phase 1 of this vision is getting closer to completion. Thanks to the determination and hard work of a lot of people we’re hoping final design and engineering will conclude soon.”

The trail extension will add another 1.3 miles of pedestrian pathway for users of the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail, heading in a south-west direction.

DID YOU KNOW —

The SCPRA is involved in leading a ‘Creative Community Initiative’ as part of a pilot project through the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Community Collaborative (ATCCC).

This idea focuses on connecting downtown (King Street) to Dykeman Spring Nature Park (the duck pond area) by enhancing surface, on-road-improvements, adding signage, and upgrading the existing trails, footbridges, and benches.

Earlier this year, the Park Authority Director — who also represents the group as the President of a local non-profit organization (FSCP) — was part of a regional summit spearheading the development and engagement for these efforts.

Extending the Dykeman Walking Trail into town is important for outdoor recreation, cultural infrastructure, and economic growth — particularly because Shippensburg serves as a hub for access to regional trails and nearby natural areas.

The team will be attending an action summit later this week to share progress, which features having already secured some grant funding in these early stages of planning.

*Note: The team features members from the Middle Spring Watershed Association, Friends of Shippensburg Community Parks, Shippensburg Borough Council, Cumberland County Planning Department, Ship Area Chamber of Commerce, Center for Land Use and Sustainability, and the Franklin County Conservation District.
